"The Brooklyn" cuts through Saugus |
Description: |
A slightly later than normal Brooklyn (ZBRLC 24) was kind enough to come through town at almost exactly in the middle of my morning coffee break. Only problem was how faded that front GEVO was. The train is withni the last thirty or so miles of about a 970 mile trip. |

Day Bud on P&G Spur |

A rather rare move, the Day Bud LOF42 has come all the way up to Oxnard with some hot wood pulp cars for Proctor & Gamble. The train surprised me, peaking out behind the building like that. I heard Jaws theme song and snapped the shutter. |

Malabar Switcher at the 49th St Wigwag |
Description: |
The 49th Street Wigwag is probably the wigwag protecting the most track today (nine tracks) of Malabar Yard. The local works the yard and the area to the north and east. At one time, stacks and manifests came through here on the way to the Harbor, but today, the furtherst anything goes is about another 100 yards south. The train is about to stop to let the brakie off, before proceeding across the crossing. |

Malabar Switcher Y-LAC0112 |
Description: |
A pair of derated GP50s (with the embarassing moniker of GP25) begin their day at Malabar. One of them was spewing some kind of white smoke, indicating that something else was burning besides diesel fuel. This job work Malabar Yard on the north end of the former ATSF Redondo Branch, later the 4th District, and then the Harbor Sub. Today, the middle of this line is a rusted parallelgram, but Malabar still sees work every weekday morning. |

Detouring and deadheading at CP Saugus |
Description: |
March 2011 saw a lot of detours and some mate trains for Amtrak's Coast Starlight, but much of that was planned for. This particular move had to be made in order to keep the trains running. When the previous day's Starlight was trapped in @akland due to slides on the Coast, the equipment was deadheaded under the symbol AMT 11X to get the trainset back to LAX. The train came down through the SJQ Valley and then the Saugus Line. It's seen here passing CP Saugus. |

IBRLCX 02 |
Description: |
A rare extra makes its way down the Saugus Line, passing through the Golden Valley part of Santa Clarita. IBRLCX 02 has quite an insteresting lashup, a very luck GEVO up front, one of the late model SD70Ms with a nose a little like an SD70ACe in the middle and, yes, in 2011, an SD40-2. Had a storeowner come out to ask me what I was doing when I took this shot. Told him all about being a railfan. |
