Album Info:The pellets are taconite (a form of iron ore) transloaded from Great Lakes ships. They are VERY dense and heavy. Even though the hoppers aren't loaded to the tops, they ARE loaded to capacity in terms of weight. A train like that about 70 cars long would weigh about 9200 tons, including the weight of the loads and the cars (assuming 100 ton loads). There are a couple of pretty stiff grades to the east of Rook on the W&LE, so the tractive effort of the 5 SD's working together is needed to get the train over the hills. The helpers are positioned mid train to manage the stress of all that weight versus all of that tractive effort and keep those heavy trains from breaking in two.
