Album Info:The Slate as its called today. Originally planned as a route from Boston to New York, the line was graded to the Connecticut border and was known then as the Boston and New York. The line was completed from Brookline, Massachusetts to Woonsocket, Rhode Island. Eventually the line was built to Pascoag and renamed the Woonsocket and Pascoag and was acquired by the New Haven Railroad thru the complicated mergers around 1895. In September of 1937 the track was abandoned from Pascoag to its present terminus at Route 5 in North Smithfield, Rhode Island. Later the Slate became a Penn Central branch with those mergers. The Slate became an isolated branch of the Penn Central when the Providence and Worcester regained their independence in 1973. Now part of the Providence and Worcester Railroad, this album contains current photos and information on the Slate that runs from end of track at Winter Street (now Prospect Street) in Woonsocket, to end of track at Route 5 in North Smithfield. 1 January 2013, confirmed O'Neil Steel closed and property for sale. O'Neil last active customer. The branch itself owned by the Town of North Smithfield. Future uncertain. On 14 March 2013, PW place the Slatersville Branch out of services. Switch at Woonsocket spiked and clamped with all crossing deactivated.
