South Australia Rwy 930-class diesel
Title:  South Australia Rwy 930-class diesel
Description:  SAR bought 37 930-class units from Goodwin from 1957 to 67. They were Alco model DL-500B "World Series" design with 1600HP 251 engines on C-C trucks and retained the classic Alco cab-unit looks; they are considered dual-ended as the blunt "B" end has a set of controls as well. Several still operate in Australia. Class-unit 930 sits on display at the National Railway Museum.

Description:  Adelaide Metro single-car DMU 3017 passes a grove of Eucalyptus Trees as it comes off the Grange Line while preparing for a station stop at Woodville on a Sunday afternoon. The line to the right heads for Port Adelaide and Outer Harbor. The tracks are broad-gauged; this line is supposed to be electrified in the future.

Bankers
Title:  Bankers
Description:  For many years the small South Australia rail town of Tailem Bend has been the place where additional power was added to trains before they took on the up-to-2.5% grades of the Adelaide Hills. On this quiet Saturday morning Pacific National has a pair of units waiting to be added as "bankers" (helpers) to get a westbound container train over the hills. DL-class DL39 is a 1988-built 3300HP Clyde/GM, model AT42C.

Entering Tailem Bend
Title:  Entering Tailem Bend
Description:  A pair of NR-class units bring a westbound container train (MP5) into Tailem Bend, where they will pick up two additional units before assaulting the Adelaide Hills. The lead unit, NR84, is one of two which carry special "Southern Spirit" paint for a passenger train of the same name.

Hot Train in South Australia
Title:  Hot Train in South Australia
Description:  Westbound Pacific National train MP7 runs quickly through the South Australia bush on its way to Adelaide and Perth. The "Superfreighter" is considered a hot train on this line; three NR-class units provide the power, including lead NR25, in special Indian Pacific paint. (and many thanks to Dave & Bruce, two local Gunzelers, for helping explain operations and other details to an otherwise confused Yank!)

Crossing the Murray
Title:  Crossing the Murray
Description:  Two NR-class units bring eastbound PNA freight PM6 across the Murray River at the suitably named town of Murray Bridge. The Murray is one of the few inland navigable rivers on the Australian continent. The NR-class makes up the backbone of Pacific National's container train fleet. 120 were built in the mid-to-late 1990s and they can be routinely found in coast-to-coast in Australia.

PNA NR2
Title:  PNA NR2
Description:  Pacific National NR-class NR2 with a freight on the Murray River Bridge with sister NR23 trailing. The Goninen-built NR-class is one of the most numerous groups of locomotives in Australia. 120 were built for National Rails in the mid 1990s; the 4000HP units are functionally similar to the GE C40-9 in the US. Other than the letter panel, NR2 still wears its original National Rail paint as well.

Climbing Out of Adelaide
Title:  Climbing Out of Adelaide
Description:  This is the mainline departing Adelaide South Australia from the 'railfan seat' in an Adelaide Metro DMU. The tracks on the right are standard gauge and used for freight and long-distance passenger trains. We're on broad gauge; note the extra set of clips in the concrete ties for possible conversion to standard gauge (which is not an issue-yet). The signal is green; the slanting set of lights would be all white if the train was set to take the next passing siding. The grade here is about 2.2%.

Adelaide Metro DMU at Belair
Title:  Adelaide Metro DMU at Belair
Description:  A pair of Adelaide Metro DMUs sit at the Belair station on a beautiful Sunday morning. This is the 'end of the line' for DMU ops, being a roughly thirty-minute ride up the Adelaide Hills from the city on the 5'3" broad-gauge. The 3100-class cars were built in the early to mid-1990s by Clyde; each one has a 475HP Mercedes-Benz V12 for power.

Belair, SA
Title:  Belair, SA
Description:  The depot and tracks at Belair, South Australia, looking southwest and only a 30 minute ride on an Adelaide Metro DMU from downtown. The suburb of Adelaide is near the summit of the climb over the Adelaide Hills, which features grades up to 2.5%. The area behind the tracks is a National Park which features walking trails and is full of Magpies, Kookaburras and Cockatoos. This is a delightful place to watch trains.

Light Power at Belair
Title:  Light Power at Belair

Imported Wig-Wag
Title:  Imported Wig-Wag
Description:  A Wig-Wag signal preserved and displayed by the depot at Belair, South Australia- it's a Magnetic Flagman from the Magnetic Signal CO of Los Angeles CA. "Caution-Stop" doesn't need translation; and works because "Look Out for the Bloody Train" probably wouldn't have fit.

ALCOs Running Stone on the Broad Gauge
Title:  ALCOs Running Stone on the Broad Gauge
Description:  A Genesee & Wyoming of Australia stone train runs south near Dry Creek on a Sunday afternoon. This is broad gauge territory (it even says so on the pilot); the tracks at the far left are standard gauge. Power is a pair of Australian-built Goodwin-Alcos- 700-class 704 (one of only five in service) and 830-class 841.
