UP Freight crossing BN Diamond at Fairlawn |
Description: |
Here, the L-NJ56 local is crossing BN's St. Louis to Springfield, MO, Cuba Subdivision in Kirkwood. The boxcars behind the diesels are loaded with Wisconsin book paper and are destined for Von Hoffman's now-shuttered Crestwood, MO, publishing facility, which manufactured children's school books. Today, this view is completely different as the diamonds are long gone and UP's right-of-way overgrown here. |

UP 178 |
Description: |
UP's LNJ592 local heads south down UP's former Missouri Pacific Carondelet Branch, which was re-named the "Kirkwood Industrial Lead" when the middle portion of this line was abandoned in 1993. This train is making a rare move down the stubbed branch to Watson Rd. near Crestwood Mall to retrieve an empty depressed-center flat car that was carrying a transformer load for a nearby AmerenUE substation. This crossing would only be used a few more times before this trackage was abandoned in 2000 (from the junction with UP's Jeff City Sub at Kirkwood all the way to end-of-track in Crestwood @ Pardee Rd., about 2.5 miles). Since abandonment, these crossing signals have been replaced with stoplights, which protect cyclists using Grants Trail. |

UP Local crossing I-44 |
Description: |
UPs 592 "Pacific" local, on this day a single unit, trundles over Interstate 44 in Crestwood, MO, heading westbound for Kirkwood Junction, and on towards Pacific. Its hard to believe that just a decade earlier, several times a day, heavy westbound freights would grind over this bridge on their way to Kansas City. Photo taken from the Big Bend overpass, approx. 1/95. Today this bridge, painted a hideous green by its new tree-hugging tenant, is part of Gateway Trailnets "Grants Trail" extending several miles to the southeast. While I like the concept of "rail-trails" as they preserve rail corridors for future rail use, should this ever become likely here, Gateway Trailnet, its supporters, and the residents of Crestwood and Grantwood Village would likely take on a bloody fight all the way to congress. |

End of Madison Sub |
Description: |
Dont let the modern gates and welded rail fool you; here, a Union Pacific rail train is pulling up the former CNW SI Line across IL Route 143 in Edwardsville, IL, then known as the "UP Madison Sub." Just a few years earlier, the line was busier than ever, hosting UP re-routes following the meltdown of the UP/SP merger. Shortly after Halloween in 1998, the line finally fell silent after abandonment was pushed back several times due to detour traffic. Rail was removed from Madison, IL, to DeCamp, IL, and from Nilwood, IL, to Barr, IL. The line remains active from Barr to Nelson. |

UP Inspection Special |
Description: |
UPs classy DD40X #6936 is seen here crossing over Chippewa Ave. in South St. Louis City on the Oak Hill Branch of the DeSoto Subdivision with an inspection train in tow. This is an interesting move considering for years, Missouri Pacific, the lines former owner, had restrictions on "D-D" series units on this portion of the railroad. Note the hulking industrial building in the background -- this is the former Brown Shoe factory which was shuttered decades ago. |

Pea Ridge Run |
Description: |
Missouri has some of the richest iron reserves in the world. The Pea Ridge Mine, about an hour southwest of St. Louis, opened in the 1950s and was served by a 30 or so mile long branch off the Missouri Pacific DeSoto Subdivision known as the "Pea Ridge Subdivision." The mine has had several owners, and the most recent one closed down all operations in 2001. UPs mine run ran every Sunday morning out of St. Louis, the L-SH55. Most Sundays, I followed the train all the way to the mine and back. This photo was taken of the final run - a decent 60 car train - in September 2001 near Sullivan, MO. The two small GEs really made some noise pulling all that tonnage! Since then, the Pea Ridge Sub has fallen silent, but used on odd occasions by UP to store railcars. The mine is currently idled, but Alberici construction has purchased it and has plans to open it up to world production. Stay tuned. |
