Album Info:Maine is seeing a lot of new railroad traffic this summer. Word in the media indicates as many as 4 load oil moves are coming east from the Dakotas and Saskatchewan destined for the large Irving refinery in New Brunswick. This traffic is divided between Pan Am Railways, The MMA and The Eastern Maine. Two trains run through Portland, Waterville, & Bangor along the old MEC main line where it is interchanged with the Mane Eastern - operated by New Brunswick Southern (NBSR) - at Mattawamkeag. Two additional trains enter on the MMA main via Jackman (former CP) and are interchanged at Brownville Junction with the Eastern Maine RR. The Eastern Maine continues along the former CP main via Mattawamkeag - where it joins the PAR traffic - to run another 20 miles or so east through Vanceboro and on into Canada. All the railroads involved are showing the strain of the increased traffic. PAR is doing track upgrades all along the orgional MEC main line, MMA is obtaining more power and training additonal crew, and EM (NBSR) is short of power as well. There are lots of run through power moves. The hundred plus car trains that enter the state are often broken up into segements added mixed into other traffic. Word is that Irving is building a terminal able to unload 100 tank cars a day at it's refinery. It looks like Maine is going to see quite an improvement in it's rail system as a result of this traffic. /DL
