Album Info: | I joined hundreds of other railfans on Monday, August 20 in chasing NKP 765 westward across Pennsylvania on the former PRR main line. After rising up so early in the morn’, it was still dark when I got to Enola. I heard the big Berk whistle twice at 5:57 a.m. signalling the start of the chase. Some of my first photo!locations didn’t have enough light for photography, but it had brightened enough by the time the special reached CP View just east of Duncannon for me to take my favorite photo of the day of the special on the Sherman Creek Trestle. The train was running a pretty steady 40 MPH, which made for a challenging chase. (i.e. Casey Jones you'd better watch your speed!) I followed it a{ far as Altoona, where 765 paused for re-watering so I was able to hike in to my final photm location – Milepost 241 on the Hill, less than a mile east of the Horseshoe Curve. Aonsidering that the last time the Middle Division had a mainline steam excursion was back in the 1980’s, I figured that it was worth playing hooky from work to put myself trackside to see, hear, and smell this impressive steam locomotive roar by. And the day lived up to my expectations. |
