State Route 28 grade crossing - MP 25.7
09 October 2004
The inaugural crossing of the newly installed State Route 28 grade crossing. This is the first train to cross Route 28 at this location since 1976.
Thanks to a grant, the CMRR was able to have the road resurfaced, allowing the tracks to be raised to pavement level (the tracks had been paved over), and new warning signals & gates installed.
This crossing allowed the CMRR Phoenicia operation to extend east of Mount Tremper (it's prior eastern terminus location) to Cold Brook, and extending the trip 3.8 miles.
Oddly, only two people were present "on the ground" to document the crossing: myself and the editor of the Phoenicia Times, Paul Smart. Coincidentally, I wasn't there because of planning, just sheer luck! I was on my way to Hudson Maritime Museum with my family to take a boat ride to the Rondout Lighthouse..
I happened to the see the train getting ready to cross, and pulled over to shoot the occasion. Paul also photographed the event, but forunately for me, he chose to use my image in the upcoming issue of the Phoenicia Times... |
