WLE 2-8-2 #6018 (will become NKP #688 in 1949) |
Description: |
Although it was officially still a Wheeling & Lake Erie loco, this 1918 Brooks-Alco M-1 class "heavy Mikado" would be renumbered by the Nickel Plate Road in 1949 to #688. It had the typical 63" drivers and 200 psi boiler pressure common to all NKP Mikados. Sadly it was sold for scrap on 4/23/1955 to the Luntz Iron & Steel Co. |

NKP 2-8-2 #624, Nickel Plate Road (New York, Chicago & St Louis) |
Description: |
Fifteen of these were built by Lima in 1922 as a class H-6d with 63" drivers and developing 200 psi. One of only three preserved NKP 2-8-2's, this one was donated to Hammond, IN on 9/13/55 and is still there but in much worse shape. The photographer C.W. Burns noted on the photo back "One of the first engines given to a city for display. Now in sad shape, but are trying to fix it up. Also will fence it." August, 1970 reprint. |

NKP 2-8-2 #646, Nickel Plate Road (New York, Chicago & St Louis) |
Description: |
Another of the thirty of these were by Lima Locomotive Works in 1922-23 as a class H-6e. Like the rest of the NKP Mikados, they had 63" drivers and developed 200 psi boiler pressure. It was sold for scrap on 12/20/1961 to Luntz Iron & Steel. This is the way I like to remember Nickel Plate locos - roaring down a Midwest prairie track blowing smoke skyward! |
