Beyer-Garratt 4-8-4+4-8-4 Under Restoration |
Description: |
The Canberra Railway Museum has two operating steam locomotives, a 4-4-0 and 4-6-0 with both built in England in the late 1800s. They are also working on restoring this Beyer-Garratt to service as well. Unfamiliar to most US railfans, the Beyer-Garratt features two complete sets of 4-8-4 running gear under one locomotive. New South Wales bought 42 of the AD60 class from Beyer-Peacock in the UK from 1952 to 1957. They were the largest steam locomotives in Australia and operated until 1973- at a time when US diesel builders were delivering SD40-2s and U30Cs. 6029 has 144 tons of weight on its 56" drivers. This should put on quite a show when it finally steams, hopefully in late 2014. |
