NKP 2-8-4 #770 - Nickel Plate Road |
Description: |
Great action shot of Nickel Plate Berkshire doubleheading a freight. With Tom Beckett's help in identifying (see comment below), a PA-2 unit was helping after the first car - definitely a sign of the end to steam. Not much info given on the back of the photo except the note "Sunrise, March 20th. 3 above zero" Built by Lima in 1949, it exemplifies the quote "Horsepower at speed". Specifics - S3 class, 69" drviers, impressive 245 psi boiler pressure, 25x34" cylinders, engine weight of 428,500 lb, tractive effort of 64,135 lb. All of the S class had Worthington Type 5 SA feed water heaters, Elesco Type E superheaters, Standard Type MB stokers, Precision Type F-3 reverse gear, and 14" (356 mm) piston valves. Location and year were not given so approximates were used. Ludlow photo |

NKP 770 on the Turntable |
Description: |
It's Friday May 30, 1958 as Nickel Plate Road #770 (2-8-4) takes a spin on the turntable in Conneaut, Ohio at the roundhouse. Note the, what looks to be, ALCO switcher still in the roundhouse. Photo by James Pope. |
