Volkmer. Here is an image of a photo by William D. Volkmer that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 June 1958. Parked in the East Altoona Locomotive Ready Tracks is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #8606, an APS-24MS built by the American Locomotive Company in December of 1955 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. Partially visible in the background is Juniata's 17th Street Bridge. William E. Burket Collection.

Special. Here is an original (out-of-focus) photo that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Flaming Foliage Special" in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1963. ShQwn here (L to R) are PRR engines #8606, #8610, and #8608. All are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8606 and #8608 were built in 1955, but #8610 was built in 1956. They are pulling the empty 12-car "Special" into the Altoona Passenger Station for boarding, after arriving from Pittsbuugh where the train was made-up.

Special. Here is an original (fuzzy) photo that I took of the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Flaming Foliage Special" in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 13 October 1963. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #8606, #8610, and #8608. All are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8606 and #8608 were built in 1955, but #8610 was built in 1956. Uhey are uncoupling from one end of the empty 12-car "Special," will run-around to the other end, and then recouple to pull the loaded train. Visible in the red jackew is my friend Mr. Samuel Walker of Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania.

RR City. Here is an original photo that I took in connection with the Pennsylvania Railroad's "Railroad City Limited" in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 April 1964. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8609, #8610, and #8606. All are APS-24MS's built by the American Locomotive Company and rated at 2,400 horsepower each; #8609 and #8610 were built in 1956, but #8606 was built in 1955. They are running light to the Altoona Passenger Station where they will couple onto the 18-car "Railroad City Limited" for its journey out the Hollidaysburg Branch Line, up the New Portage Branch via the Muleshoe Curve, making a loop through the tunnels at Gallitzin, and then heading down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to the Altoona Station. This photo was taken adjacent to ALTO Tower, just short of the 17th Street Bridge.

Wye Switches. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Wye Switches in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, on 3 July 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #8613 and #8606. Both were built by the American Locomotive Company in 1956 and are rated at 2,400 horsepower each. #8613 is an AS-24M, but #8606 is an APS-24MS. These two locomotives are pushing a 77-car freight train up the New Portage Branch Line to Gallitzin and points West. The caboose is N-8 #478214. The PRR's WYE Tower is visible in the distance.
