Big Boy 4011 |
Description: |
Union Pacific 4011 rests in the Laramie yard. It wont be long before the engine is backed onto another train for the run across the Wasatch. 4011 was one of 25 4-8-8-4 Big Boys Union Pacific would own, and would become one of the unlucky 17 to be scrapped. 4011 would be the last of those 17 to meet the torch, finally being cut up at Cheyenne on June 14, 1963, 3 years and 11 months after its last run. UP 4011 Rescue |
Description: |
On October 21, 1956, UP Extra 4011 West departed Cheyenne with 37 cars of bauxite ore. Even a Big Boy could not handle the extreme tonnage, and the train stalled just east of Granite. The dispatcher sent 4021 to push the train up the hill. Here, the train rounds the curve at Buford. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

Big Boy 4011 |
Description: |
UP 4011 has just topped off with coal and water in Rawlins on Halloween Eve, 1956. 4011 will be scrapped on June 14, 1963, the last Big Boy scrapped. By that point, only 8 remained, and, thankfully, they have all been saved, including 4014, which as since been returned to active service. Never did I think I would get to see a Big Boy running in the 21st Century with my own eyes, all thanks to the UP Steam Fleet. Servicing At Cheyenne |
Description: |
UP 4011 takes on a new load of coal prior to another run across the Wasatch in August, 1957. 4011 would stay in service until the very end of UP steam in 1959. The engine would pull the second-to-last freight train ever pulled by a Big Boy, arriving in Cheyenne on the morning of July 21 with 62 loads and 28 emptys from Laramie. 4011 even outlasted its brethren in retirement, being outlived only by its 8 preserved sisters. 4011 would meet its fate on June 14, 1963, just under 4 years since it pulled its last train into Cheyenne.
