Description: |
FM. Here is a duplicate 35mm B&W slide of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania. Revised Caption: "Twin-unit Electro-Motive diesel emerging from [New Portage] Tunnel on downgrade to Altoona. Summer, 1949." Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #9558 and another "EF" Class unit whose road number is not recorded. Both were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9558 is an EF-15 built in September of 1948 and retired in December of 1963 after just 15 years of revenue service. In the right foreground is the turnout to the eastbound New Portage Secondary Track. This photo comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (22-63). |
