Description: |
Zak. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Martin S. Zak that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, perhaps during 1951. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9572 and three more "BF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #9572 was built in March of 1949, rated at 1,500 horsepower, and retired in December of 1963 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, they're pulling a merchandise freight train around the Curve on their way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. |
