Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Fred Kern that was taken at the Brick Yard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 23 July 1955. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #9520 and three more "EF" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,500 horsepower each. #9520 is an EF-15 built in May of 1948 and retired in October of 1962 after just 14 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-B-B-A set of locomotives is pulling a merchandise freight train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. ("Tchowee"; #16 of 39) |
