PRR 3721, I-1S, 1948 |
Description: |
FM. Here is an image of a photo by Fred McLeod that was taken at the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in August of 1948. Shown here (R to L) is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #3721 and another locomotive whose road number is not recorded. #3721 is an I-1S (2-10-0) "Decapod" built in Juniata during June of 1919 and retired in March of 1956 after 37 years of faithful service. They're serving as tail-end pushers on a freight train that's rounding the Curve on its way up the Allegheny Mountains to Gallitzin and points West. Once past the Gallitzin Tunnels, they'll be uncoupled and head back down to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up "The Mountain." This image comes from a B&W slide set entitled "Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Railroad" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa. William E. Burket Collection. |
