A far distance shot: NSB El 13 is a Norwegian electric locomotive which was used by Norwegian State Railways (NSB) for both passenger and freight trains until late 1990ties. NSB El 18 is a class of 22 electric locomotives built by Adtranz and Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) for the Norwegian State Railways (NSB). The class is a modification of the Swiss Federal Railways class Re 460 locomotive and built at Adtranz Strømmen in 1996 and 1997. Prior to the final negotiations, union representatives for the train drivers stated that Re 460 was their preference, and that NSB could expect a dispute if they chose a different model. The representatives stated that they were "tired of experimenting with Norwegian solutions". |

A step out on the hotel patio and you get this view in the evening sun. NSB operates 18 of the class EL18, usually on intercity and interregional trains. Since EMU taking up those services more and more, the E18 became the choice for Flam Railway to replace older equipment. Usually four E18 units are operating the daily trains, while one unit makes backup at Flam station. |

A ride with Flam Railway - Norway |
Description: |
In the landmark year of 1924 for Flåmsbana, construction started on the 20.2 km / 12 miles long railway. 20 tunnels were planned, 18 of which had to be carved out by hand. The tunnel work costs one of the navvies (workers) lifes a month. The tunnels totalled 5692 metres. The work force varied between 120 and 220 labourers, depending on the strength of the Norwegian economy. Passenger traffic was allowed starting 10 February 1941, after extra sets of engine-powered brakes were installed on three of the locomotives. The Ministry of Transportation decided to call the new railway line “Flåmsbana”. |

Construction of the line started in 1924, with the line opening in 1940. The tunnels were the most difficult and time-consuming part of construction. Of the twenty tunnels, machines were only used for two tunnels, the rest were built by hand. Hand-construction was done by drilling up to 4.2 meters (14 ft) through the rock, filling the'holes with dynamite and blasting. |
