Snapping the First Class
Description:
No.25 - The Duquesne - with a pair of U25C helpers and three E units with 22 cars and healthy head-end traffic is coming out of Scotch Run Curve at MP 241 on this first day of September, 1966 at a time when renumbering of locomotives had begun for the pending Penn-Central merger. PRR helpers on the point were referred to as "snappers". Note the lead E unit still has its trainphone antennas.

Description:
Two EMD E ulits are heading up this passenger train. PRR 4208 was first delivered as one of the 5800 numbered units, it was renumbered after PRR 2-10-0 #4208 was retired. Note the lack of a Pennsy stripe on the lead unit but a solid one on the trailing unit. Date and location unknown.

Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide by an unidentified photographer that was taken at the horse racing track in Bowie, Maryland, during August of 1962. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #4222 and another E-7 whose number is not recorded. Both are EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #4222 was built as number "5862" in February of 1948, renumbered "4222" in preparation for the PRR-NYC merger, and retired in September of 1967 after just 19 years of revenue service. In this context, this A-A set of locomotives is poised to make the return run to Washington Union Station with their seven-car racetrack special. ("Tchowee"; #6 of 29)

Zak. Here is an original 35mm color slide by Martin S. Zak that was taken while riding in a Pennsylvania Railroad passenger train around the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1966. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #4224 and two more E-7's whose numbers are not recorded. #4224 is an EP-20 built by GM-EMD in 1948 and rated at 2,000 HP; its original PRR number was "5864." The train is traversing the Curve on its way down the Allegheny Mountains to Altoona and points East. Also visible on the right is PRR engine #1361, a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" built in Juniata during 1918, retired in September of 1956, enshrined at the Curve in June of 1957, and restored for excursion service in April of 1987.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #4230 and three more "EP" Class units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #4230 is an EP-20 built in April of 1949 as number "5870," rated at 2,000 horsepower, and renumbered "4230" in 1966. They have just emerged from the New Portage Tunnel with an eastbound passenger train, and are on the way down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Altoona, Harrisburg, and points East. The bridge the train is crossing passes over the westbound New Portage Branch just before it merges with the main line.

Here is a postal card entitled "Next Stop, Merger City." No Postmark. The photographer is not identified. Caption On Reverse: "Pennsylvania RR EMD E7 #4244 and E8 #4295 whisk a passenger train near Chicago in August, 1966. Recently re-painted tuscan red, both units wear Penn-Central style numbers on sides, anticipating the approaching PC merger." Both locomotives were built by GM-EMD. #4244 is an EP-20 constructed in August of 1947 as number "5844" and rated at 2,000 horsepower, while #4295 is an EP-22 built in March of 1951 as number "5895" and rated at 2,250 horsepower.

PRR Eastbound Passenger, 1952
Description:
17th Street. Here is an image of a photo by John Dziobko, Jr., that was taken from the 17th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 25 July 1952. This was the site of the Pennsylvania Railroad's engine ladder and ready tracks at 17th Street, now long gone. Passing under the Bridge is a PRR passenger train pulled by an A-B set of unidentified EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. (Perhaps it's E-7A #5840.) The train is about to stop at the Altoona Passenger Station for crew changes, as well as to discharge and receive passengers, before resuming its journey to Harrisburg and points East. Parked near the trainshed is a K-4S (4-6-2) "Pacific" steam locomotive, waiting for its next helper run up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and back. William E. Their crews are waiting for orders to proceed with their passenger train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin, whereupon #6513 will uncouple and return to Altoona for yet another helper/pusher run up the Mountains. All are EP-20's built by GM-EMD and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5845 was built in August of 1947, while #5866 was built in March of 1949. Produced and distributed by Krone & Co. FSF. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken in Altoona, Pennsylvania, in September of 1959. Shown here (R to L) are Pennsylvania Railroad engine #5847 and two more "EP" Class units whose road numbers are not recorded. All were built by GM-EMD. #5847 is an EP-20 built during August of 1947, rated at 2,000 horsepower, and retired in June of 1964 after just 17 years of revenue service. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Footbridge with a passenger train, and will soon stop at the Altoona Station on their way to Pittsburgh and points West.

They are pulling a passenger train down the Allegheny Mountains and around the Curve on their way to Altoona, Harrisburg, and points East. The date is an approximation.

Brickyard. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Brickyard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 July 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #5703, #5862-B, and #5848. All were built by EMD. #5703 is an EP-22 built in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower. #5862-B and #5848 are EP-20's and rated at 2,000 horsepower each; #5862-B was built in 1948, but #5848 was built in 1947. They are pulling an 18-car eastbound passenger train and will soon stop at the Passenger Station in Altoona. At that point, not only will passengers exit and board the train, but both engine and train crews will change.

24th Street. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 11 October 1963. Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5850, #5803, and #5849. All were built by EMD. #5850 and #5849 are EP-20's built in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower each. #5803 is an EP-22 built in 1952 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge and will shortly stop at the Altoona Passenger Station for a crew change with a 27-car mail/express train. The famous Brick Plant is visible in the right center of the photo.

PRR E7 5849 at about 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on May 9, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The E7 was built August 30, 1947 (c/n 3985) on EMD Order E745, became PRR 4209 and later PC 4209. Based on my fading memory, this is between 4:00 PM and 5:00 PM, so this could be either Train #48, The General, due out of Union Station at 4:15 PM, or it might be Train #28, The Broadway Limited, due out at 5:00 PM.

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #5850 and #5795. Both were built by EMD. #5850 is an EP-20 built in 1947 and rated at 2,000 horsepower. #5795 is an EP-22 built in 1952 and rated at 2,250 horsepower.
