"Spike 150 Train"
Description:
The "Spike 150 Train" heads east through the Echo Canyon, Utah, on its way to Evanston, Wyoming, May 12, 2019. We luckily got ahead of this train by driving down Echo Canyon Road thanks to finding a good route on my newly purchased Utah DeLorme atlas. We got ahead of the crowd from Echo, UT going east. People passed us around "Blind Curves!!!!" I used my "MA" motor drive out the rear window! "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 leads the train! UP ordered twenty five "Big Boy" locomotives between 1941 and 1944. The frame is “articulated” with two sets of driving wheels, perfect for negotiating tight mountain turns. 4014 was built in 1941 and last steamed in 1959. It eventually was restored to operation, converted to run with oil and put in service specifically for use during the anniversary celebrations in 2019. (Canon AE-1 Program 35mm camera, Fuji C200 print film)

Title:
"Spike 150 Train"
Description:
The special Union Pacific "Spike 150 Train" arrives in Evanston, Wyoming, May 12, 2019. I am standing on a pile of dirt! "Big Boy" 4-8-8-4 and "Living Legend" 4-8-4 # 844 pull the train! UP ordered twenty five of "Big Boy" locomotives between 1941 and 1944. The frame is “articulated” with two sets of driving wheels, perfect for negotiating tight mountain turns. 4014 was built in 1941. 4014 last steamed in 1959 and eventually was restored to operation, converted to run with oil and put in service specifically for use during the anniversary celebrations in 2019. 844 was UPs last steam locomotive purchased in 1944 and has never been retired and also was converted to run with oil. (Mamiya C220 Medium Format camera, Kodak Ektar 100 print film)

TRBX 4-8-4 #1111 - Timken Roller Bearing Co
Description:
Beautiful Alco-Schenectady 4-8-4 Northern type steam locomotive that served the Timken Roller Bearing Company as their demonstrator for a year. Nicknamed "Timken Four Aces", this loco was built to demonstrate the unique advantages of having all sealed roller bearings rather than plain bearings or a combination of the two. It was demonstrated on 14 different railroads and by August of 1931, had run over 90,000 miles when it was delivered to the Northern Pacific, the 15th and last demonstration. While under their use, it suffered serious crown sheet damage that NP refused to repair. Timken and NP finally settled the problem through the sale to Northern Pacific, becoming their #2626. Specs - serial #68056, 73" drivers, impressive 250 psi boiler pressure, 27x30" cylinders, engine weight of 371,000 lb, tractive effort of 63,700 lb. No photographer was listed for the photo and inaccurately labeled 6/22/1930.

NP 4-8-4 #2610 - Northern Pacific
Description:
Beautiful and powerful was this Alco-Schenectady 4-8-4 Northern style steam locomotive built in January of 1927. She was a member of the class A group, the very first 4-8-4's built for North American railroads after collaboration between Alco and Northern Pacific. The wheel type name was literally a shortening of the orginal label of "Northern Pacifics". After these beauties started in revenue service replacing double header Pacific sets, there was a sudden drop in use of helper engines throughout their service area due to the increased horsepower of these locos. Of the eventual 49 iconic Northern Pacific Northerns that were built for the NP by vairous companies, none have survived the scrap yards.
