CB&Q 130AB |
Description: |
I wrote nothing but the date and "130AB" on the slide, so here is a good guess about what you are looking at. Photo shot from a dome on the westbound Morning Zephyr (the sun reflection is a big hint) somewhere on the CTC single track main east of Savanna and west of Aurora. 130A is in the hole. Since the freight is short and the brakeman is getting on and watching the Zephyr, I assume this is the local morning (Savanna to Eola) freight called the Pick Up done with its work here. I was deadheading to Saint Paul to work Oakland Tower for the Q. I worked as a leverman, operator, and/or station agent for the Q for two summers during college. |

Locomotive 131A was built in October 1948 (c/n 7008) and traded in on a GP40 during March 1968. From my perspective, the most interesting part of this photo is the first freight car after the locomotives. The was the first black CB&Q 3-bay hoppev I ever saw. All the CB&Q 3-bay hoppers I saw before this date were painted red, so this was f surprise (and a treat) to me. |

This locomotive was built during November 1948 (c/n 7051) on EMD Order E957A and was traded for credit to GE on an order for U28B's during March 1967. It represents the Phase 4 carbody, the only spotting difference between this carbody and the Phase 1 F7 is the dynamic brake on the roof, The F3 had two rectangular grills, and the F7 had a 36 inch diameter fan, located in front of the first exhaust stack. |

CB&Q F3 132A |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 3, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. There are a couple of gentlemen on the bridge observing, and here's what transpired as best I remember: My friend, Ed DeRouin, explained to me that this was a local freight, and if there was a 'hot' car, they would set it out at Naperville, to be picked up by the East End Way Freight, and delivered to the customer, avoiding the usual setout at Eola, and adding a day to the delivery. The head-end brakeman is conferring with the crew, and they will set out a boxcar of newsprint paper (typically in a CP boxcar), that will be picked up and delivered to the newspaper printer in Downers Grove. However, there are some logistics to work out. This train has stopped short of Loomis Street, the only level crossing in Naperville, and will cut off here so as not to block the crossing. Unfortunately, the train has already activated the automatic crossing gates, and vehicular traffic has been stopped by the lowered gates. The switch to the siding is on the other side of Loomis Street, so someone will have to flag the crossing while the setout takes place. My guess is that the Fireman is getting drafted into crossing protection duty. |

CB&Q F3 132A |
Description: |
CB&Q F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 3, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built on EMD Order E957 during November 1948 (c/n 7050), it was traded as credit for a GP40 in January 1967. Order E957 was for 17 A/B/B/A F3 sets, and the delivery spanned three Phases of F3 production. Sets 122-125, delivered in April 1948 were Phase II F3's equipped with the new 36 inch unshrouded cooling fans. Sets 126-129 (Phase III) had louvers between the side porthole windows and lacked the "chicken wire". Sets 130-138 introduced the stainless steel Farr Air grills at the top side of the carbody, making the Phase IV F3's look much like a Phase I F7, except for the rectangular openings on the roof for the dynamic brakes instead of a 36 inch fan. |

CB&Q F3 132A |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 132A westbound at Naperville, Illinois on October 28, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in November 1948 (c/n 7050) on EMD Order E-957 as the lead motor (as the CB&Q called their individual locomotives) of the four unit F3 set 132A-B-C-D. Delivered with drawbars and considered a single locomotive, it is termed a Phase IV F3, with the carbody configuration of a Phase I F7, except for the dynamic brake openings on the roof, which are rectangular openings instead of a 36" fan (on the F7). By the 1960's, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and the F's were mixed freely to form the horsepower required for the job they were assigned. This particular motor was traded in on an order of GP40's in January 1967. No CB&Q F-units made it to the BN merger. |

I do not have the flyer for this trip, but I have one for the previous Sunday (11/22/1964) for a trip to Rockford, and another flyer for a couple of Sunday's after this date (12/13/1964) advertising a trip from Chicago to Santa Claus Land (two hours west of Aurora), possibly Ottawa or Flagg Center, near Oregon, Illinois, where there was a wye to turn the train. |

A friendly wave from the cab of Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 136D eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on August 10, 1964, slide by Chuck Zenler. This image was 37th on a 36 exposure roll, so Kodak did not put it in a mount, but included an iron-on mount for me to mount it myself. As a 16 year old, I tried to squeeze an extra exposure out of each roll of film, sometimes I gdt lucky (as in this case) sometimes I didn't. Number 136D was built in November 1944 (c/n 7019) and traded to EMD in January 1967. And I should be called on the carpet for standing between live rails when I took this photo. |

Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 136A eastbound at Naperville, Illinos on February 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The EMD F-units were known as Graybacks on the CB&Q. This particular unit (or motor, as the individual units were called on the Q) was built on EMD Order E-957 in November 1948 (c/n 7018) as the lead cab of a drawbar-coupled A-B-B-A set of Phase IV F3's, road number 136. Beginning in 1951, the Burlington began replacing the drawbars with couplers, at first breaking the A-B-B-A sets into A-B sets, still drawbar coupled. Eventually even those drawbars were replaced with couplers. This motor was traded in to EMD on an order of GP40's in March 1968. |

CB&Q F3 162 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on November 15, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. Built in June 1948 on EMD Order 1007A, this three unit F3 set was the only locomotive built under EMD Order E1007. The F3A's were c/n 6506 & 6507, while the B unit was c/n 6508. Considered a single locomotive (or motor, on the CB&Q), it was drawbar connected so there was no need to display suffix letters, although the letters were assigned for maintenance purposes. In the mid-1960's these units were broken up, couplers replaced the drawbars, and the suffix letters were applied to the cab side and numberboards. All three units were traded to EMD as credit on a GP40 order in January 1968. The gentleman on the phone on the left side of the frame is calling the dispatcher. Although the switches are manually thrown, they are electronically locked. It was unusual for a train to cross over at Naperville, so there must have been a problem between Naperville and Downers Grove, where there were dispatcher-controlled crossover switches. This train will soon cross over from Track 3 (which he occupies in this photo) to Track 2, but will have to stop when the rear end clears the crossovers, so the rear brakeman can realign and lock the switches. |

CB&Q F3 162 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162 westbound at Naperville, Illinois on March 14, 1965, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The slow film of the day would not permit a sharp image in this lighting situation, but the train was stopped, and that gave me the opportunity to get my camera and get the shot. The signal that stopped this train was in the distance and some Engineer's could get their trains stopped before blocking Loomis Street, the only grade crossing in Naperville. The gates were down, but they would send out the head brakeman to flag the crossing and get automobile traffic around the gates and across safely. |

CB&Q F3 162 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162 eastbound at Aurora, Illinois on July 17, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Although three locomotives are seen, this was considered a single locomotive (or motor, as the CB&Q employees called them) , and were lettered with suffix letters in small one-inch letters below the word BURLINGTON on the side for maintenance purposes. During the 1960's the A-B-A F-3's were broken up, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and the suffix letters were added to the numberboards. This unit could be either 162A (c/n 6506) or 162C (c/n 6507), both built in June 1948, both traded to EMD on an order of GP40's during January 1968. |

It was delivered as a drawbar-connected A/B/A set. The individual units were given suffix letters, barely visible in one inch letters painted on the sides below the word BURLINGTON. Sometime after this photo, but before the end of the year, the drawbars were replaced with couplers, and suffix letters were applied to the sides and numberboards. The lead unit pictured could be either 162A or 162C. |

CB&Q F3 162C |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad F3 162C westbound Naperville, Illinois on December 18, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is Second Train #11, the Nebraska Zephyr. In addition to Zephyr duties, Train #11 also carried the mail between Chicago and Lincoln, Nebraska. This second section is all mail storage cars. It is in charge of freight units, probably capable of keeping up with the stop and go schzdule of First #11. Locomotive 162C was built in June 1948 (c/n 6507) as the rear cab of motor 162 (CB&Q term for a set of coupled locomotives), and traded in for credit on an order for GP40's in January 1968. |

Description: |
*Note, there is actually no way to tell if the F3s are 163BC because two other F3s could have been hooked on that day. Assuming they are, then we have 163A F7A blt 1950, 163BC F3B F3A blt 1948 and a 2 car Dinky. This is no doubt the Fairview Av Interlocking. |
