UP GP38-2 2256 |
Description: |
Union Pacific Railroad GP38-2 2256 crossing the North Fork of the White River in Norfork, Arkansas on June 28, 1990, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. I got the following information from the book, "The White River Railway", by Walter (Mike) Adams, Library of Congress Card # 91-91855, copyright 1991: In 1879, railroad magnate Jay Gould of the Union Pacific Railroad acquired stock control of the Missouri Pacific, becoming the MP's President. He quickly purchased stock in the Saint Louis Iron Mountain & Southern, and by 1881 purchased the StLIM&S outright. His objective now was to unite the two properties, so he had a survey drawn up for a connection paralleling the White River in Arkansas. Also on Gould's mind was the immense amount of freight carried on close to 100 barges per day on the White River, as well as zinc mines located along the proposed route. Upon Jay Gould's death in 1892, his eldest son, George J., took over, and the construction of the connecting railroad was organized as the White River Railway. By 1902, the material for this bridge had been floated up the White River by steamboat, although the exact site of the bridge had not yet been determined, and the railhead was still close to 35 miles to the south. The survey crews were looking at two possible routes through this area, one through Yellville (which had offered the railroad a $35,000 bonus, right-of-way through the county, a depot in Yellville, and the necessary land for sidings), and an alternate route through Mountain Home (which offered the railroad $40,000, free right-of-way, and a $10,000 depot to be built of Baxter County marble and the roof plated with Baxter County zinc). Yellville countered with $20,000 cash, 15 acres of land in Yellville, six acres of land for each depot built in the (Marion) county, and a $5,000 stone depot in Yellville. In the end, the railroad was routed along the White River, south of Mountain Home, and north of Yellville, crossing the White River at Cotter. Cotter (named for William Cotter, General Manager of the White River Railway) ultimately became a crew change point, a roundhouse was built, and a second story was added to the Cotter depot for a dispatcher's office. The company set up to promote and build Cotter was the Red Bud Realty Company, so perhaps there is more to this story. This particular bridge was originally surveyed to cross the North Fork (thus the town name of Norfork) of the White River at 397 feet above sea level, but orders came from Saint Louis to raise it to 408 feet. Construction of the bridge was completed in June, 1903. Even at that, this bridge would occasionally be under water during spring floods, until a dam was built about ten miles upstream in the 1940's. At the time of this photograph, the bridge was 88 years old. It has seen the trains of the StLIM&S, the MP, the UP, and now the M&NA. Today it is over 100 years old and still sees a few trains daily. The White River is not seen here but runs between the trees and the bluffs in the background. |

Since theses rails (part of the old Lincoln-Union branch of the MP) now lead to a dead-end, the locos will later push the cars out instead of pulling. Lincoln, NE 5/1/97 |

UP GP38-2 2265 |
Description: |
Union Pacific GP38-2 2265 at Cotter, Arkansas on October 28, 1990, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built for GATX/Citicorp October 1976 (c/n 757136-13) for lease to the Rock Island as their 4327. When the RI folded in 1980, the lease was picked up by the Missouri Pacific, and the 4327 became MP 2265. When the MP was bought by the UP in 1984, the locomotive continued in MP paint, becoming UP 2265 June 12, 1990. Around December 17, 2000, it became UP 765. Starting in November 2006, because all 52 units were owned by GATX, and the UP decided that all of its short-term leased units should be in the numbers of the lease owner, GATX began processing all 52 units through National Railway Equipment for reconditioning and renumbering to their respective GMTX road numbers (GMTX 2110-2160), this one becoming 2136. It appears to have been retired January 29, 2008. As for the smoke, I suspect some of it is steam. When the UP bought the MP, it inherited a piece of railroad running between Newport, Arkansas and Aurora, Missouri, generally following the course of the White River until it reached this point. As you can see, there is a slight grade, and this is where the rails left the river banks and started the climb through the Ozark Hills, finally leveling out around Branson, Missouri. There were a lot of relatively sharp curves and several tunnels, which required helper engines and a lot of track and tunnel maintenance. The UP didn't really want this piece of railroad, the only attraction was the Arkansas Power & Light generating plant at Newark, Arkansas, about ten miles from Newport. After a few years of sending unit coal trains down this track, the UP determined they could route around the Ozarks by running down to Little Rock and backtracking to Newport, delivering to AP&L using the last ten miles on this piece of railroad, so they sold the rest to the Missouri & North Arkansas. A siderbar here; The right of way between Aurora and Newport was (for the era) well equipped, with welded rail and automatic detection equipment, which was removed by the UP before the sale to M&NA. I have a photo a the last train before M&NA took over, and it's a train that replaced welded rail with jointed rail. As for the steam, before the sale to M&NA, the unit coal trains had been routed around this area, leaving only a local based at Cotter. There were a few small industries to switch, mostly feed for the local turkey farms, and some plastic pellet shipments for Baxter Labs. This required one crew, and a pair of GP38-2's were left in Cotter for this purpose. The yard in Cotter was located next to the White River, and in earlier times, it would often be under water during spring floods. There was a lot of humidity from the river, and in warm weather, the locomotives would be shut down during the evening. The crew would arrive in the morning and spend about an hour or so getting their lineup, the diesels would be started and left idling. When the crew went to work, the engineer "wiped the throttle", blowing the White River and a variety of combustion problems out of his exhaust manifold. Seen here shoving two empty pellet hoppers up the hill, he will stop short of the grade crossing around the bend, cut off and run back down the hill. A switch will be thrown, the empties will coast down the hill behind the locomotives, and be routed on an adjacent track so they be be on the other end of the locomotives. The local would then assemble his train and be off up the hill to do his day's work, returning to Cotter later the same day. |

UP Freight crossing BN Diamond at Fairlawn |
Description: |
Here, the L-NJ56 local is crossing BN's St. Louis to Springfield, MO, Cuba Subdivision in Kirkwood. The boxcars behind the diesels are loaded with Wisconsin book paper and are destined for Von Hoffman's now-shuttered Crestwood, MO, publishing facility, which manufactured children's school books. Today, this view is completely different as the diamonds are long gone and UP's right-of-way overgrown here. |
