LN GP9 #545 - Louisville & Nashville
Title:  LN GP9 #545 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:  Crisp photo from an original negative by an unknown Chicago photographer. Built by EMD in February of 1957 for the Chicago & Eastern Illinois as their #238, it was later sold to Missouri Pacific as their #345. Later it was sold to L&N as their #545. It appears that the unit did not make it to the SCL roster. The date and location are approximate "guess-timations".

LN GP9 #545 - Louisville & Nashville
Title:  LN GP9 #545 - Louisville & Nashville
Description:  This EMD GP9 locomotive turns out to be quite a boomer as it bounced from one railroad roster to another during its service. Originally built by EMD in February of 1957 as Chicago & Eastern Illinois #238, it became MP #345, TP #345 before landing on the Louisville & Nashville roster as their #545. It didn't stop there as it eventually became SCL #2413. No photographer, date or location was listed for this b&w slide. However, with C&EI boxcars in the background, it is most likely Evansville where the C&EI interchanged with the L&N. The date is approximate and set before its renumbering as a SCL member in 1971.

L&N GP9 553
Title:  L&N GP9 553
Description:  Louisville & Nashville GP9 553 was parked on one of the ready tracks at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on 24 March 1961. The locomotive had come in from Pass Christian, Mississippi on commuter Train No. 9 and would return east (railroad north) on No. 12. The 553 was one of three L&N GP7’s (550-552) and two GP9’s (553, 554) that were equipped with both steam generators and train control equipment. These locomotives spent much of their early lives on the line between New Orleans and Mobile, and were frequently used on commuter train Nos. 9 and 12 up until these trains were discontinued on 6 May 1964. The 553 was renumbered 540 in 1965, and later became L&N 2410 and then Seaboard System 2410.

alongside her Canadian brothers
Title:  alongside her Canadian brothers
Description:  Soo Line passenger engine 553 waits at Winnipeg for the return trip to Minneapolis/ St Paul! The Soo Line was really the Canadian Pacific in the USA, just as the Great Northern and the Northern Pacific jointly owned the Burlington which gave them a route to Chicago! On the Great Northern the overnight train between St Paul/ Minneapolis and Winnipeg was called "the Winnipeg Limited" and on the Soo Line it was called "the Winnipeger". On the "GN" the distance was 457 miles.

31 cents a gallon
Title:  31 cents a gallon
Description:  It was probably not June 10th, 1968 because that was my operators date on the Milwaukee Road and I was in La Crosse, Wisconsin taking the "rules class" with the Chief Dispatcher back in those days when there was such a person! It was a time when GP9s ran together with F7As and/ or Bs--- and when GP30s & GP35s were new! AND before I forget it was also when gas was 31cents a gallon! That must have been nice you say?! Well considering that people then maybe made 2 or 3 dollars an hour and 5 cents worth of Jelly Beans would last all day--- I suppose all things are relative! But was it better than?! Yes and No is perhaps the correct answer!

How many freight houses were there in downtown St Paul? The St Paul Union Depot saw passenger trains from these six plus also the Burlington and the Rock Island!
