Description:  A CN local crosses the W. Lawrence St. grade crossing and passes the recently closed S. Locust St. grade crossing as it heads northeast via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI on 29 Dec. '17. Train was headed for Little Chute and Kaukauna. The S. Locust St. grade crossing was closed as part of Appleton's quest for so-called quiet zone status. The "Do Not Enter" signs (there is one on the far side of the tracks as well) were put up in an attempt to discourage distracted drivers from trying to drive down the railroad tracks.

GTW 4907 and IC 3110
Title:  GTW 4907 and IC 3110
Description:  A CN local crosses W. Prospect Ave./Hwy. BB while picking up a string of cars from the southwest end of the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 14 Aug. '18. When the local reaches the middle of the road, it will be spanning 3 communities at once in a peculiar spot of the sometimes confusing local borders. This section of the road is the border separating the Town of Grand Chute, Outagamie Co., WI to the north (left) and Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, WI tntil 14 Apr. '16) to the south (right). The locomotives and a couple of freight cars are in the Town of Grand Chute, thanks to an unnatural jog in the border, the remainder of the train is in Appleton. The former SOO main line is just out-of-frame to the left.

Description:  A CN local crosses W. 2nd St. while setting out a string of cars at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI on 15 Dec. '18. Train will soon continue on to Little Chute and Kaukauna. Carter's Caboose, 1428 W. 2nd St., a small, old, rail side tavern, is partially visible beyond the train at left. It dates to at least 1930, when it was a soft drink establishment owned by Hubert J. Merkel and August F. Brandt (Prohibition was still in effect). By ’36 it was a tavern operated by Albert Giesen, owned by Mrs. Gretchen Merkel. By ’38 it was Bob’s Tavern, still owned by Mrs. Merkel. It was the Junction Tavern from at least ’43-’71, still owned by Mrs. Merkel until at least ’60 (there were at least two different owners between ’67-’71). At some point in the ‘70s it became Pete’s Junction (possibly Palomino Pete’s Junction). It was called Netticoat Junction ca. the ‘90s (owned by Joanne M. ‘Nettie’ Nett).

Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN local passes through the former SOO yard at Menasha, WI on 26 Dec. '18. It's awesome to see a local which consists of all boxcars. The facility at right is currently home to Alliance Industries, 320 Appleton St., they apply powder coatings and manufacture sand cores. Founded at Waupaca, WI in 1979, they leased this facility in 2005. They later purchased the facility as well as the adjacent one at 313 Appleton St. The facility was home to Menasha Mill Supply Co. from at least 1939 through the 1970s, they primarily processed waste paper. It clearly used to receive rail service, but it does not seem to currently. The former MILW yard was located on the other (south) side of it; the building could be serviced by both railroads simultaneously.

Description:  A CN local crosses N. Lake St., as it heads southeast via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI on 18 Apr. '19. Eggers Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, is visible in the background. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. There used to be 3 spurs to service the facility, now there is only 1.

Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. as it crosses over from the yard lead to the passing siding at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was preparing to head for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna and had two locomotives, GTW 4907 and CN 9530. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St. used to be the yard. I don't know when the current yard was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here. The Winneconne Ave. overpass can be seen in the background at right. The guardrail in the foreground denotes the former Caroline St. grade crossing. The pair of telephone poles toward the right stand at the former Adams St. grade crossing.

GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Title:  GTW 4907 and CN 9530
Description:  A CN local parallels Union St. and approaches the former Sherry St. grade crossing at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 11 Jan. '20. Local was headed for Appleton, Little Chute, and Kaukauna. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond that. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. The WC (later SOO) depot stood on the opposite side of Sherry St. from those two buildings; it was built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard here.

Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  As a CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye, and a CN work train pauses on the north leg of the wye, a CN local also creeps onto the north leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 9 May '20. On the far side of the train lies Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye. A large quantity of fill is being added to the eastern half of the park, in preparation of future improvements. The Fox Valley Energy Center (formerly Minergy Fox Valley Glass Aggregate Plant) dominated the eastern half of the landfill from its opening in Jan. '98 until demolition was completed in the spring of '16. The former C&NW bridge across Little Lake Butte des Morts, now part of the Friendship Trail (often erroneously referred to as the Trestle Trail), can be seen in the background. The Roland Kampo Bridge, a.k.a. the Polish Connection, can be seen beyond that.

IC 3108 and GTW 4907
Title:  IC 3108 and GTW 4907
Description:  An unusually small CN local pauses in front of the depot/yard office at the former C&NW yard at Appleton Junction, WI, on 7 Jun. '20. There used to be a diamond right about where the rear truck of IC 3108 is, from ca. 1874 until at least 1968, where the MLS&W crossed the C&NW. When the MLS&W was absorbed by the C&NW on 1 Sep. 1893, their line became the Ashland Div. of the C&NW. The white building behind the depot/yard office is the former home of the Harry H. Long Moving and Storage Co., 1001 S. Douglas St. This building dates to at least 1953, when it was listed in the local directory (it was not listed in ’51). The building has a spur, but it hasn’t been used for quite a while (except for occasional MoW equipment). Now called Harry H. Long Moving Storage & Express, Inc., the company, founded in 1917, is still family owned. It moved to a larger facility in Town of Clayton, Winnebago Co., WI in 2001.

Description:  A CN local hugs the bluff, passes the Vulcan Heritage Park, and passes the S. Memorial Dr. bridge over the Fox River as it descends the grade into 'The Flats' via former C&NW rails at Appleton, WI, on 30 Oct. '20. Local was headed for Kimberly and Combined Locks. Now just a short branch line, this stretch of rail is a remnant of the MLS&W main line which once ran from Milwaukee to Ashland. The MILW rails used to run parallel along this side of the active rails. Over the past several years, I have noticed that some misinformed individuals erroneously refer to ‘The Flats’ as ‘Oneida Flats,’ or some other variation. For all of my life, the historic, industrial heart of Appleton has been simply ‘The Flats.’ However, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was referred to as 'The Water Power.'

Description:  A CN local, with 7 cars, crosses the Fox River Navigation Canal via the former C&NW swing bridge in 'The Flats' at Appleton, WI, on 28 Nov. '20. Train was returning from Kimberly and Combined Locks. I haven't noticed a builder's plate, but according to bridgehunter.com, the Warren through truss swing bridge was built in 1908. However, a recent contributor to that site believes it was built after 1919. A photograph caption in the Post-Crescent on 29 May 1974 states that the bridge was "nearly 50 years old." The canal is in the foreground, but the body of water beyond the spit of land to the left is the last remaining scrap of what was once the South Channel of the Fox River through 'The Flats.' Old maps reveal that the west end of the South Channel was filled in at some point between 1916 and 1957. Most of the remainder of the South Channel was filled in the following years.

GTW 4907
Title:  GTW 4907
Description:  A CN train approaches N. Lake St. as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 17 Feb. '24. A KK Integrated Logistics facility, historically Kimberly-Clark’s Lakeview mill, 249 N. Lake St., Neenah, WI (physically located in Fox Crossing, Winnebago Co., WI (formerly Town of Menasha, Winnebago Co., WI, from 1855 until 14 Apr. 2016), looms in the background. KK Integrated Logistics purchased this facility on 12 Jan. '22, after Clearwater Paper Corp. abruptly shut it down in '21. Originally incorporated as Lakeside Paper Co. on 9 Nov. 1910, construction of the mill began in ’11, and paper production commenced on 12 Jun. ‘12. At some point they started to sell a large share of their book paper production to Sears, Roebuck & Co. for their catalogues. The mill was sold and re-incorporated as Lakeview Paper Co. on 9 Aug. ’20. Sears, Roebuck & Co. bought the facility ca. the mid- to late-‘20s. The mill was shut down on 1 Feb. ’29 after a boiler failure and Sears promptly sold it to the Canadian firm of Fraser Paper, Ltd. (which also produced book paper for Sears). Fraser did not hold it long, they sold it to Kimberly-Clark Corp. ca. Mar. ’29. Kimberly-Clark sold the facility to American Tissue Mills ca. Aug. ’96. The mill abruptly shut down on 6 Sep. ’01 due to American Tissue’s significant financial problems. The briefly idled mill was purchased by Cellu Tissue Corp. in ’02 and was renamed Cellu Tissue Corp. - Neenah, commonly shortened to Cellu Tissue - Neenah. Cellu Tissue Corp. was acquired by Clearwater Paper Group in ’10. This huge industrial facility supplied hundreds of jobs for over a century. From now on it might supply a dozen, maybe a few more, if we're lucky. This facility received rail service for 109 years. It will probably never see a freight car again.
