They are pulling a westbound mixed-cargo freight train near Newport, Pennsylvania.

Description:  Sweetland. Here is duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by David R. Sweetland that was taken near Gallitzin, Pennsylvania, in October of 1960. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #7249 and two more "Geeps" whose numbers are not recorded. All are EFS-17M road switchers built by GM-EMD and rated at 1,750 horsepower each. #7249 was built in October of 1959. They are pulling a mixed-cargo freight train, and are about to enter the Allegheny Tunnel on their way to Conway Yard and points West. In the right foreground is the link to the westbound New Portage Secondary Track.

Description:  Brickyard. Here is an original photo that I took of a Pennsylvania Railroad train at the Brickyard Crossing in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 18 July 1965. Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #9768, #7249, and #9392. All were built by EMD. #9768 is an EF-15A built in 1951 and rated at 1,500 horsepower. #7249 is an EFS-17M built in 1959 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. #9392 is an ES-12 built in 1950 and rated at 1,200 horsepower; it is just being towed, however. They are pulling a 93-car westbound mixed-cargo freight train with caboose #477807. There are also two pushers on the end: PRR engines #8608 and #8613.

Shown here (L to R) are PRR engines #2413 and #7255. #2413 is an AF-24 built by the American Locomotive Company in 1962 and rated at 2,400 horsepower. #7255 is an EFS-17M built by EMD in 1959 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 24th Street Bridge with a 108-car mixed-cargo freight train on their way through Altoona to the Enola Yards. The caboose is #477777.

Description:  E&M. Here is an original photo that I took at the Pennsylvania Railroad's Juniata E&M Shop Yard in Altoona, Pennsylvania, during April of 1966. Shown here is the trusty turntable on the left. Beyond it are dozens of locomotives in various states of repair: from work almost finished to being cannibalized. Many makes and models are represented. Visible in the foreground is PRR engine #2329, an EF-25 built by EMD in 1965 and rated at 2,500 horsepower. Further back is PRR engine #7259, an EFS-17M built by EMD in 1959 and rated at 1,750 horsepower.

Shown here (R to L) are PRR engines #7262 and three other units whose numbers are not recorded. All were built by EMD. #7262 is an EFS-17M built in 1959 and rated at 1,750 horsepower. They are about to pass under the 4th Street Bridge and into the Eastbound Receiving Yard with a fully-loaded coal train. The westbound train of empty hopper cars pulled by engine #6046 is on the next track over. Visible in the distance is the 7th Street Bridge; beyond the Bridge are some of the PRR 12th Street Car Shop buildings. The venerable black water tower ~ last vestige of the Age of Steam in this part of town ~ stands guard on the right. Photo taken from the 4th Street Bridge.

Description:  It's Friday night and the equipment from train #987 is put away at Pemberton. Minutes later, the operator at Cooper will gives C&E Extra 7268 North (the CB-21 with GP-9 7268) a K card for a Clear-block to State Street in Pavonia. The Pemberton Branch represented the last manual block passenger operations on the PRR proper (the LIRR and PRSL excepted).
