Smoke and mirrors
Title:  Smoke and mirrors
Description:  The mirror in this case being the puddle that is reflecting the plume of smoke this NYSW Alco is sending skyward as it gets underway out of East Binghamton with cars for home. That nice looking D&H sign at right will soon be replaced by a CP sign, but the D&H spirit will remain.

NYSW 3000
Title:  NYSW 3000
Description:  This is one of my oldest scanned rail photos. Originally it was color, and shot with 110 film, but when I scanned it I only had a black and white Omniscan, and when I looked for it recently I couldn't find the original to make a rescan, so here's the old scan. The date is guessed, but I know at least that it was in the Fall of 1990.

BH 1 on the Cortland side
Title:  BH 1 on the Cortland side
Description:  Getting a train on the Syracuse Branch during this era was something of a challenge. Conrail retained the line as far as Jamesvillem south of Syacuse, to serve a stone quarry, and was not willing to sell it to NYSW. As a result, the Suskie had only local business on it, which was served roughly twice a week. At the time, the Utica Branch was the more viable line, with almost daily service. So it was a catch to find a train running here. I got lucky this day, getting C 430 3000 rolling into Cortland.

Description:  It was deep snow and deep cold this day in January, temperatures in the teens, as was the depth of the snow pack. Does that keep me in?? Dont be silly. There are trains to chase. In this case, its BH 1 with a three builder consist, heading north up the connection from the D&H that was built as part of the Bevier St improvement, where the D&H bridges were raised to allow standard 136" trailers, and the ex DLW bridge used by the NYSW was removed in favor of the new connection.
