OHCR Working Austintown |
Description: |
After switching out a car, engineer Kevin Loue backs OHCR #8702 (GP11) and OHCR #8712 (GP11) out from inside Penn-Ohio Logistics on Thursday March 12, 2020. This is part of the old Youngstown Steel Door plant, on Hendricks Road in Austintown, Ohio, and is a spot where Id go catch the Ohio Central working long before I had my driver’s license. I grew up just down the street and would ride my bike to the tracks whenever I heard them working. Its been twelve years since Ohio Central became part of Genesee and Wyoming family, so it’s always great to see a matching set of OC units (and a matching set of GP11s). With the arrival of the first G&W orange unit to Youngstown in late 2018, scenes like this won’t last forever. Also, of note, OHCR #8702 is lettered “Pittsburgh and Ohio Central” on the side and has just recently returned to Youngstown after years of being on the POHC in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. |

OHCR on the Y&A |
Description: |
Finished up with their work in Austintown, OHCR #8712 (GP11) and OHCR #8702 (GP11) are shoving their 6 cars down the hill of the Youngstown and Austintown Branch back towards the CSX New Castle Sub in dwindling evening light. It’s 5:55pm on Thursday March 12, 2020, and the train has just ducked under I-680 and is crossing North Belle Vista Avenue on the west side of Youngstown, Ohio. The two refrigerated boxcars have come from United Freezer and Storage and the four empty flatcars have come from Penn-Ohio Logistics. Its been twelve years since Ohio Central became part of Genesee and Wyoming family, so it’s always great to see a matching set of OC units (and a matching set of GP11s). With the arrival of the first G&W orange unit to Youngstown in late 2018, scenes like this won’t last forever. ICG 7963 |
Description: |
You could pretty much count on ICG to provide a fair amount of variety back in the day. This train rolled by the weather-beaten remains of the old passenger depot in Freeburg, IL with five units -- one GP8, one GP10, one GP11 (in the short-lived all orange paint scheme), a GP30, and a GP35 still wearing GM&O number and colors. ICG was nothing if not colorful back then. |

Grain train |
Description: |
We're getting ready to haul out 75 loads of corn. On IANW, this took two trips from the elevator to Spirit Lake, where we split again into 2 cuts each in order to make "Mount Mother", a 2% grade just east of Spirit Lake. We shoved outbounds for several miles, since there was no run-around at the UP interchange. The fun of shortlining. BTW, the flagging on 8711 is left over from the Fireworks passenger train the day before. |

Although I've got a folder for IANW, I think a picture here is also required. IANW was so out-of-the-way that railfans hardly ever saw it running. I worked there, so I had an in. Pulling up the hill in a snowstorm, we're going to deliver MTs for corn loading, and loads of fertilizer. I still can't believe this is now a trail.... |

catching on |
Description: |
Left to right, Conductor Fred Goff and Brakeman Johnny Tyner are seen catching on a train in front of the depot. Fred retired in 2004 with 34 years of service with the IC and Johnny was killed in a tragic accident at work in December of 1998. The train in the siding is a southbound freight that was detouring because of a derailment on the Yazoo District. The train's crew hogged here at Grenada and is currently awaiting a new crew. |
