Title:  2017 CN/GTW "Santa Train"
Description:  Canadian National’s yearly “Santa Train” passes the old Durand, Michigan train station, December 17, 2017. This station was originally built in 1903 and has daily Amtrak service. The train is running on CN’s subsidiary railroad Grand Trunk Western and is connecting west from Pontiac, MI. Lead locomotive #5930 is a Grand Trunk Western SD40-2 painted in CN paint and sublettered “GTW.” The other engine, #9614, is a GP38-2 from the Illinois Central and is also in CN paint, sublettered “IC.” CN purchased Illinois Central Railroad in 1999. (Mamiya RB67 Medium Format camera, Kodak Ektar 100 print film)

Description:  Three CN trains (2 through freights and a local) bide their time along Harrison St. at the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 19 Dec. '18. They were waiting for an approaching container train. Local had one locomotive, IC 3107. Southbound through freight had three locomotives, CSX 214, BNSF 8132, IC 9614. Northbound through freight had four locomotives, CN 5707, CN 5475, NS 9708, BNSF 4989. Neenah Foundry Plant 2 & Plant 3 are partially visible in the background at right. Plant 2 opened in 1960 and Plant 3 was built in 1967. Plant 1 opened in 1918 and stood about a mile to the north, until it was closed in 1994 and eventually demolished.

Description:  A CN through freight passes the Main St. overpass as it traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI on 8 Jun. '19. The white building partially visible at left is, or was, Progressive Paper Storage, Inc. (formerly Kimberly-Clark Warehouse (K-C Warehouse)), 135 Millview Dr. It does not receive rail service, but it looks like there may have been a spur on the northwest side of the building in the past. First Presbyterian Church, 200 S. Church St., can be seen above the second locomotive. The clock tower of the once impressive 1888 city hall building, intersection of S. Commercial St. and W. Doty St., looks like a church steeple from this perspective, but it is a block east of the church. Several of Neenah's hideous, modern eyesores, posing as architecture, pollute the majority of the skyline.

Title:  ICG GP38-2 9615
Description:  ICG GP38-2 9615, Corinth, Mssissippi. April 3, 1984, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built in December 1974 (c/n 74646-16), one of 40 GP38-2's built as the first new locomotives for the ICG. The GP38-2's were named for prominent historical figures, and this one was named John A. Logan. As far as I can tell, John Alexander Logan was a Colonel in the Union Army during the US Civil War, known by the nickname "Black Jack". During the Siege of Corinth, Logan commanded first a brigade and then the 1st Division of the Army of Tennessee. In the spring of 1863, he was promoted to the rank of Major General. After the war he was a US Representative and later a Senator from Illinois. Closer to home, my understanding is that Logan Square in Chicago was named after him, and I lived there for ten years, giving me the opportunity to snap some of the photos I've posted on this web site.
