CN 3075, CN 3058, LMIX RG316 |
Description: |
A CN container train traverses the S-curve at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 18 Apr. '20. Train had two locomotives, CN 3075 pulling as well as CN 3058 mid-train. The remnants of the foundation from the ca. 1955 masonry SOO depot can be seen to the left of the lead locomotive. There are rail sections supported by concrete blocks and railroad ties stacked upon it. It was built to replace the wooden depot built in 1891 on Sherry St., about 850 ft. to the southeast, which was torn down soon after the new one opened. To the right, LMIX RG316 rests upon the north leg of the wye. Eggers Div. of VT Industries, 164 N. Lake St., an active rail customer, dominates the horizon. Founded at Neenah, WI, in 1910 as Hardwood Products Co., construction of the facility commenced in Oct. ’10. It was renamed Hardwood Products Corp. as a result of a merger with Mississippi Veneer & Lumber Co. on 20 Apr. ’22 (the latter company was formed by the same businessmen who founded the Neenah company). Eggers Industries acquired Hardwood Products Corp. in 1965 and renamed it Eggers Hardwood Products Corp. Eggers was founded by Fred W. Eggers at Two Rivers, WI in 1884 to make wood baskets used by farmers. They later started making plywood and other wood veneer products. The name was changed to simply Eggers Industries at some point. It was acquired by Holstein, IA, based VT Industries, Inc., on 2 Oct. ’18. |

"Mystery Tanks" |
Description: |
After the northbound empty ethanol was out of the way, the CN sent what appeared to be a loaded ethanol train through Flora. Upon further inspection however, these tank cars were marked for chemical and acid use rather than ethanol. This is one of few runs that carries chemicals between Memphis and points in Louisiana. |

CN 3059, CN 2861, CN 3276 |
Description: |
A CN through freight parallels Union St. and passes the former Sherry St. grade crossing as it backs into the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. The historic Murer House, 432 Sherry St., stands to the left. It was built by Felix Murer in 1892 (construction commenced the previous year). It was briefly (ca. 1893) known as the Northern Pacific Hotel, almost certainly a reference to the short-lived corporate relationship between the WC and NP railroads. It was owned by Joe Mayer [Meyer] ca. 1907, still known as the Murer House (likely Joseph A. Mayer). It was owned by Ole M. Lyken by 1914, it was known as the Lyken Hotel ca. 1920. Circa 1923-24 it was a grocery store owned by Mrs. Mary E. Lyken, Ole’s widow (he passed away in ’23). From at least 1928 until 1939, it was the Mayerl Grocery, owned by Mayme Mayerl. At some point it was turned into a tavern and is currently home to Sherry Town Station. Previous names of the bar include (in no particular order), Susie’s Trackside, Chesapeake Pub, Gigi’s, Mychal’s Bar (Mychal’s On Sherry Street), Sit and Sip Tavern, et al. The historic Neenah Cheese & Cold Storage Co. facility, 434 Sherry St., is partially visible beyond the train. It was built in 1902 after the original 1892 building was destroyed by fire and is currently used for storage. The parking lot to the left was the site of the WC (later SOO) depot, built on the north side of Sherry St. on the east side of the tracks in 1891. It replaced the ca. 1871 depot that stood at the west end of Wisconsin Ave. The Sherry St. depot was demolished ca. 1955 when a new depot was built between Main St. and N. Lake St. on the west leg of the wye, about 850 ft. to the northwest. The area between the tracks and Union St., from Main St. to Monroe St., used to be the yard. I don't know when the current, significantly larger yard (extending southwestward from Winneconne Ave.) was built, but a map from 1909 shows the yard still here. |

A CN through freight traverses the west leg of the wye at the north end of the former SOO yard at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. Arrowhead Park, a closed paper sludge landfill, lies in the foreground. Before the landfill was opened in the '50s, the south shore of Little Lake Butte des Morts came right up to the north leg of the wye (mostly hidden by vegetation). The Main St. overpass is partially visible in the background at left. |

A CN through freight passes Arrowhead Park as it heads northwest via former SOO rails at Neenah, WI, on 6 Jun. '20. Arrowhead Park is a closed paper sludge landfill. The historic Neenah Stove Works, currently occupied by Hafemeister Machine Corp., 635 Main St., and International Children's Fund, 619 Main St., is partially visible in the background at right. The oldest part of the facility dates to 1857, when the Moore & Wells foundry was established. |
