CRI&P E9 664
Title:  CRI&P E9 664
Description:  Rock Island E9 664 a little south of 47th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1979, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built as UP 903 in February 1956 ( c/n 21264 ) on EMD Order 7524 and was sold to the Rock Island August 1969. It is seen here in a dead line outside the Rocket House, having been replaced by F40PH's. Somewhere it lost its pilot.

CRIP E9A #665 - Rock Island
Title:  CRIP E9A #665 - Rock Island
Description:  Nice acton shot of Rock Island #665 in commuter service to Joliet, IL. Built by EMD in January of 1956 as Union Pacific #905, the unit along with 3 other sisters (CRIP #662-664) was purchased from UP in 1969 for commuter service. According to the Rock Island Technical Society, #665 had no steam generator and was solely used as a head end power unit. It's gear ratio was 55/22 with a max speed limit of 98 mph. An unknown Chicago photographer took the photo. The date is approximate.

Title:  UP 908 with Tr #111 Ready to Chase the Sun
Description:  UP E9A 918 and two B-units were about to leave Savanna, IL (on the Milwaukee Road) and would immediately cross the Mississippi River this late afternoon with thl combined City of Denver and City of Portland. The train would acquire the UP in Omaha. Amtrak Train No. 1
Title:  Amtrak Train No. 1
Description:  Amtrak’s westbound SUNSET was in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal with a handsome A-B-B-A set of former Union Pacific E-units and nine cars. The locomotives were E9A 908, E9B 958B. E8B 927B and E9A 947. Former UP E-units had come in on the SUNSET for the first time on 15 July 1971, so they were still somewhat of a novelty, and a matched set was rather unusual. Notice that the 908 was displaying 907 in its number boards! Up until 5 July 1965 UP locomotives displayed their train number, and this was done by inserting individual numerals in the number boards; so it looks like someone was having a little fun!

UP E9 914
Title:  UP E9 914
Description:  Union Pacific Railroad E9 914 at Denver Union Station in Denver, Colorado on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Unfortunately, I did not record this train's number, so my best guess (consulting the June 1965 Official Guide) is that this was unnamed Train 6-8, originating in Los Angeles and continuing on to Chicago. I have several photos of this same train, one shows the locomotives being fueled at the station platform, so it was a through train. The lighting suggests that this was a morning departure from Denver, and Train 6-8 departed Denver at 10:15 AM.

UP E9 914
Title:  UP E9 914
Description:  UP E9 914 at Denver Union Station on August 26, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Possibly the last E9A unit built, this locomotive was completed by EMD in January 1964 (c/n 28669) on EMD Order 7689. It was retired by the UP in May 1971 and sold to Amtrak, becoming AMTK 419. It was retired by Amtrak in 1980, sold to Precision National Corporation in June 1981 and scrapped. The job of the gentleman pictured on this day was to drive a truck of diesel fuel onto the passenger platform at Denver Union Station and refuel these locomotives. The front of this locomotive sure has been pelted.

Passenger Power
Title:  Passenger Power
Description:  Because of an impending strike on Saturday 24 July 1971, the westbound SUNSET and the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT had been annulled at New Orleans the previous day, which resulted in this unusual opportunity to photograph the power from both trains together. Both trains arrived in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, but the Southern train left early the next morning while the SUNSET departed at noon; so normally a shot like this would not have been possible. On the right are former Union Pacific E9A 947 (later AMTK 424), UP E88 927B (AMTK 370) and Southern Pacific SDP45 3207; while on the left were Southern E8A units 6908 and 2925.
