Off to Valpo |
Description: |
The late 70s found a wide variety of commuter services in the Chicago area. Some, like the BN or Northwesterns, were extensive. Others were vestigal remains of larger plans, and a few were always small. One of the smaller ones was the single trip on the ex Pennsy out to Valparaiso Ind, which Conrail inherited from PC. It ran with a pair of GP 9s and some ex PRR P 70s, though after the EL Cleveland train quit in January 1977, the cars from that service came west and were added to the Valpo train. This is the way it looked in 1978, a pair of GPs and P 70s, seen leaving Union Station. |

CR GP9 7301 |
Description: |
Conrail GP9 7301 at 18th Street in Chicago, Illinois on an unknown day in May 1979, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The bridge in the background was the IC/ICG Saint Charles Air Line. Number 7301 was built in April 1954 as Cleveland Union Terminal (CUT/NYC) 5701 (c/n 19522) on EMD Order 5340. It later became PC/CR 7301, then VTR 751, then SLR 1751, then SLR 58. It is seen in charge of Train Number 456, The Valpo. The Valpo first ran for the PRR on August 30, 1869, then called the Chicago–Valparaiso Accommodation. It was also referred to as The Valpo Local or The Dummy. It passed into the hands of the PC and then the CR. Sometime in 1979 it passed into Amtrak, renamed The Calumet, and continued until 1991. |

PC GP9 #7303 - Penn Central |
Description: |
This looks like a photo taken through the window of a train by Paul Kuehner showing ex-NYC GP9 #5903 in the PC black shroud paint scheme. Although a poor shot, it's a new addition to the RRPA database. No exact date or location was given but probably in Phillipsburg, NJ, where several of his were taken. |
