CB&Q GP7 225 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 225 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 8, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1951 (c/n 14689) on EMD Order 5072, it became BN 1581 and was retired in November 1981. It is seen here as Extra 225 East, the East End Way Freight leaving Naperville and heading toward Downers Grove. This train switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. This particular GP7 was one of a few that was not equipped with a steam generator, and in this case, a large concrete block occupies the short hood to ballast the front truck. |

Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 226 eastbound at Naperville, Illinois on April 20, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This is the East End Way Freight (Extra 226 East, to the Dispatcher) which switched the industries between Eola and Congress Park. It has finished the Naperville industries and is heading east, likely the next job will be Pepperidge Farm in Downers Grove where that air slide hopper will be set out. |

Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 226 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on April 1, 1964, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in September 1951 (c/n 14690) on EMD Order 5072, it bewcame BN 1582 and was retired in September 1983. This is the paint scheme the GP7's were delivered in, nicknamed "blackbirds" by the local crews. It would soon exchange this paint for the red scheme, nicknamed "redbird" appropriately enough. It was equipped with a steam generator, and at the time of this photo, the intake and exhaust were covered with steel caps painted to match the roof color. |

Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 226 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois on December 8, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This locomotive was built September 1951 (c/n 14690), became BN 1582, and was retired September 1983. It may appear there is dirt in the upper left of this photo, but those are pigeons who took to the air upon hearing a hard coupling. They will make a circle and land back on their home, the top of the Boecker grain elevator in the background. Also pictured is waycar (CB&Q term for caboose) 14351, which for the four years I photographed trains in Naperville was the regularly assigned waycar to the East End Way Freight. It was chalked "E END" on the cupola end by the curved grab iron. It was built at the Aurora Shops in July 1906, became BN 11087, and was retired and donated in January 1971. A note on the donation in the book, Waycars Of The Chicago Burlington & Quincy RR reads: 'Car auctioned off by television station WTTW, Chicago, IL, and sold to a private individual in Prospect Heights, IL on May 1, 1977'. I have no further info at this time. |

A similar set of controls were on the other side of the cab, so the Engineer would be on the proper side of the locomotive no matter which direction it was moving. Looking through the window, you can see a vertical pipe, which was the exhaust pipe for the Vapor Standby Heater, installed on the running board in front of the cab on the long hood side. The purpose of the heater was to heat and circulate the cooling water through the engine block when it was shut down in cold weather to prevent freezing. |

CB&Q U25B 100 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad U25B 100 at Clyde, Illinois on February 19, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. The U25B was a bold move, since the CB&Q was a loyal EMD customer for a couple of decades. One assumes there is a story from the front offices to go with this photo, but the CB&Q acquired its first non-EMD road units in this order of these six U25B's (#'s 100-105) in 1964. It surely sent a message to EMD. This locomotive was built in September 1964 (c/n 35194), became BN 5424, and was retired in May 1981. Behind the U25B is a F3B and an SD24. On the other track is GP7 233. |

Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 234 on the East End Way Freight at Naperville, Illinois, September 3, 1964, Ektachrome by Chuck Zeiler. If this is not this locomotive's first assignment after leaving the paint shop in its shiny new "redbird" paint scheme, it is one of the first. It was delivered in what was termed the "blackbird" paint scheme by the local crews in September 1951 (c/n 14698), became BN 1590 and was retired in October 1982. Although it is equipped with a steam generator, the intake and exhaust stacks are covered with steel caps to keep out the weather. |

Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 234 at Naperville, Illinois on April 12, 1966, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This is the returning (westbound) East End Way Freight, the evidence is the waycar (CB&Q term for caboose), #14351, regularly assigned to the East End job. The East End Way Freight worked all the industries between Eola and Congress Park, starting about 7:00 AM and returning (seen here) when the work was completed. Usually it would have a few empties to return to Eola, but not today. The way freight always ran as an extra train, in this case, this train is known as Extra 234 West. |

CB&Q GP7 241 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad GP7 241 and crew at Oregon, Illinois on an unknown day in June 1963, photograph by Chuck Zeiler. I'm working on crew ID. This was the power for the Oregon Way Freight, which I rode occasionally in 1963 and 1964. It was the last mixed train out of Eola. In place of the usual waycar, this train featured a 40 foot combine number 3003. In addition to serving freight customers between Aurora and Oregon, the way freight also provided passenger accommodations between those two points. On this date I was the only passenger, somewhat irritating to the Conductor ( the gentleman on the far right, "Hummy" Humiston ), who had to fill out additional paperwork for a single passenger. |
