CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4 3012 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4 3012 on Train #9, The Aristocrat, at Barr, Colorado on October 15, 1939, photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 3012 was assembled by the CB&Q at West Burlington, Iowa (c/n 5356-35), the boiler was supplied by Baldwin, the other components supplied by the same outside manufacturers used by Baldwin. It was completed in July 1935 and was sold for scrap in April 1955. A personal observation, I question if this train was actually The Aristocrat which, as its name suggests, was a much classier train, but that's how the print was marked. |

Like so many other towns along the Santa Fe, Topeka was a recipient when the ATSF got rid of its steam engines. This engine was placed on the old Mid-America Fairgrounds, and is now next to the Kansas Expocentre, which was built on the site. It is bordered on the other side by the Evel Knievel Museum, an awesome place to visit! |

CB&Q 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4000 |
Description: |
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 4-6-4 Class S-4-A 4000 at Denver, Colorado on February 26, 1938, photograph by Dick Kindig, Chuck Zeiler collection. The following is from the Burlington Route Historical Society's Bulletin 14, AEOLUS, by Hol Wagner: On the evening of February 25, 1938, Aeolus 4000 departed Chicago Union Station with Train No. 1, the Denver Zephyr. Nearly 1,000 miles west, railfan Joe Schick learned that 'Alice' was coming his way from his hometown depot agent/operator in Keenesburg, Colorado on the mainline some 37 miles north-east of Denver. Early the next morning, Schick called fellow railfans Dick Kindig and Otto Perry in Denver to alert them, then headed out west of Keenseburg to capture the 4000 speeding by at 85 mph. By the time Kindig could get down to Denver Union Station on his way to work, No. 1 had already arrived, and Dick captured this view of the locomotive easing off its train and down Track 1 before backing over to the Q's 23rd Street roundhouse for servicing. |
