Here is a photo taken by Mr. W.R. Osborne. It was included in his six-page camera study entitled "West Trenton ~ 1938" that was published originally in the August 1968 issue of "Trains" magazine, page 46. Partial Caption: "Oh, Oh ~ a wreck on Pennsy's main line has required rerouting over the Reading. The train's inoperative GG-1 electric is piloted west through West Trenton by footboarded L-1 Mike No. 3579." PRR engine #3579 is an L-1S (2-8-2) "Mikado" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works during January of 1919 and retired in January of 1948 after 29 years of faithful service. The exact date is not recorded.

Description:
This 1921 Baldwin Locomotive Works 2-8-2 Mikado was an ATSF class 4000 unit. It had the larger 63" drivers, but slightly less boiler pressure than its older sisters (190 psi), but still generated a respectable 59,801 lb tractive effort. This class of ATSF Mikados were finally scrapped between 1950-54 after serving nearly 30+ years. Date is approximate.

Long before a GP40 wore the number 4209, this Baldwin 2-8-2 Mikado had the honor. Built in September of 1912 (serial #38414) filled in freight and passenger service during its career. It was rebuilt to the Q-1ba class in 1931. After nearly 39 years of service, the loco was retired and scrapped in the month of March, 1951, at the Mt Clare, MD yard. . Original specs - Q-1b, 64" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine weight of 282,200 lb, tractive effort of 54,600 lb. This Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-2 Mikado #4430 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in March of 1921 (serial #54677). It serverd the needs of the B&O well in both freight and passenger service. Late in its life, it was renumbered B&O 418 in 1957 to make room on the roster for the incoming diesels. The loco met the scrapper's torch in Chicago, IL in July of 1959. With a trail of smoke heading skyward, this Baldwin Pacific built between 1920-22 moves through the B&O yard at Garrett, Indiana on this day in 1955. The Q-4 class loco had 64" drivers, developed 190 psi boiler pressure for its 26"x32" cylinders (dia & stroke). With an engine weight of 327,400 lb, it generatred a tractive effort of 63,206 lb.
