Pulling Quite a Train, Diamonds are with the PRR, at Englewood Union Station |
Description: |
This is Rock Island's version of EMD's BL2. BL stood for "branch line" because the unit was lighter than an F-unit and much easier to work with (i.e., steps on all corners). In a sense they were a transition to Geeps. Here 17 year old number 425 is filling out its life in commuter service with a northbound morning rush hour train at Englewood Union Station on the south side of Chicago. Those are PRR tracks it is about to cross. |

CRI&P 427 Shot From the 12th St. Bridge |
Description: |
Notice the NYC container operation to the right. They are not containers in today's sense. As you can see they are semi-trailers and can't be stacked. I'm sure the wheels had to be removed to fit under bridges and through tunnels. Note each has a NYC logo which probably means they are captive. They seem to be being unloaded/loaded at the fright house in the background. Anyhow, I bet any railroad would love today to have a contained facility this closes to the Loop and North Michigan Ave. Unfortunately I can't improve the picture quality anymore (cheap film and processing on a teenager's budget) and that the cat tails hang across the RI locos. |

This unit was one of five BL2's on the Rock, and was certainly on it's last legs, being traded in to EMD just one month later in June, 1965. |
