EL RS3 1047 |
Description: |
Erie Lackawanna Railroad RS3 1047 at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. Built in April 1951 (c/n 78577) as DL&W 909, it became EL 1047 (class MFSA-16D-4) after the 1960 merger, CR 5263 after the 1976 merger, and was rebuilt to DeWitt Geep 9994 during July 1978. As instructed by the semaphore, they have stopped to pick up orders, which the hogger is in the process of reading as I snap the photo. As far as I can tell, the trailing S2 (307) in not equipped for MU operation, so one assumes it is being delivered by the 1047 to some location where it was needed. |

ERIE S1 307 |
Description: |
Erie Alco S1 307 and EL Alco RS3 1047 stopped and picking up orders at Pullman Junction on the south side of Chicago, Illinois on April 20, 1965, photo by Chuck Zeiler. The S1 was built as Erie 307 in October 1946 (c/n 74962), classed SA-6 on the EL, and became BEDT 25 in 1968. The RS3 was built as DL&W 909 in April 1951 (c/n 78577), renumbered 1047 and classed as MFSA-16D-4 by the EL sometime after the 1960 merger and was retired in October 1976, rebuilt in July 1978 as CR DeWitt Geep 9994 by replacing the Alco Model 244 prime mover with an EMD Model 567 from a scrapped E8. As far as I know, the S1 was not equipped for MU, so this looks like the RS3 is assigned to move the S1, likely the EL needed a switcher somewhere in a hurry. |

ERIE Alco S1 #310 - Hoosier Valley RR Museum |
Description: |
Built by Alco in January of 1947 originally as Erie #10, the switcher bounced through a few rosters. After Erie mergers, it landed on the EL roster as their #310, and then in the early 1980's, it was picked up by Air Products in Florida as APTX #1010. Finally, the engine was donated to the Hoosier Valley RR Museum by Silcott Railway Equipment Company and arrived on April 25, 1997. HVRM first restored it to its opriginal Erie colors as it was found by Paul Wester when he took this color slide. Around 2005-06, the Museum repainted in its Erie Lackawanna colors more befitting the time period set for their museum. The loco is still operational. This is a Paul Wester slide. |
