The Rebel |
Description: |
The south's first streamliner makes its station stop at the Gulf Mobile & Northern passenger station in downtown Jackson, MS, on its southbound trip from Jackson, TN to New Orleans. You can see the top of the Old Capitol building in the background. This trainset was one of three that were built for the GM&N in 1935 and 1937 by American Car and Foundry. These trainsets were later referred to as the Little Rebel after the creation of the GM&O in 1940 and these trains ran until 1954. The power cars were scrapped in 1962. Today, this station now houses the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The tracks through here were removed in the late 1990s except for a small section of the main that they left infront of the station. Picture taken sometime in May of 1938. |
