Former T&P Units |
Description: |
All of the units in this image - taken on the east side of the MP engine house at Avondale Yard - were built for the Texas & Pacific, Here are at least three of the T&P's eight SW8's, along with a pair of F7A's MP 8000-8007 were built as Texas & Pacific 811-818 in January 1952, for use as light road switchers. Notice that the 8002 still has is original oscillating headlight assembly, while this has been removed from the 8003. F7A's 857 and 908 are former T&P 1558 and 1507, and SW8 8000 is parked behind the 8002. (approximate month and day) |

MP F7A 857 |
Description: |
Missouri Pacific F7A 857 found itself surrounded by SW8's outside the diesel shop at Avondale Yard. All of the locomotives had been built for the T&P and were in familiar territory. The 857 was briefly renumbered 1857 to make way for a new GP38-2, and it was retired in April 1973. The switchers lasted until 1979-1981, when they were remanufactured into slugs. MP F7A #909 - Missouri Pacific |
Description: |
Nice color slide by an unknown photographer of Missouri Pacific #909. The slide had been mislabeled as an F9 unit making it impossible to find on any roster. With Jerry LaBoda's help (see comment below), it has now been identified as an F7A unit, nee-TP #1559 built by EMD in 1949 but in this shot wearing the new roster color of Missouri Pacific. Much thanks to Jerry for tracking this one down! |

MP F7A 921 |
Description: |
When this picture was taken, Southern Railway geeps had been visiting the Missouri Pacific's Avondale Yard, at th[ west end of the Huey P. Long Bridge, for over a year on a run-through train between Birmingham and Avondale; but for some reason an MP F7 is accompanying the Southern power (GP38 2777, a GP35, a GP30 and another GP38) today. The 921 was originally a Texas & Pacific - the 1571 - as shown by the two headlights, and it would be among the last F-units in service on the MP. It was subsequently renumbered 1921, to make room for a GP38-2, and it was retired just one year after this photo. (approximnte month and day) |
