NP RDC3 #B-41 - Northern Pacific
Title:  NP RDC3 #B-41 - Northern Pacific
Description:  Built by the Budd Company in 1956 as Northern Pacific B-41 combo mail/coach, the RDC3 unit served until 1970 with the merger forming Burlington Northern. The unit was sold to Amtrak. Marty Barnard caught this unit being attached to the James Whitcomb Riley (later named Cardinal) to head to Beechgrove for rebuilding. A note on the back of the photo states "Rebuilding for Amtrak", so this was taken just before it headed to Indianapolis. Paul Kuehner photo date may be a little off - more like July or August of 1972 would be in line.

NP RDC trip
Title:  NP RDC trip
Description:  in a lot of places and to a lot of people this signal would have been called by its route signal name "Diverging Clear". But on the NP and the SP&S they were not route signals but speed signals. In this case the signal was called "Medium Clear". It was an indication as to speed and not the route to be used thru an interlocking. Two ways that different people in different places did and dared to think about the same things differently! So it once was but is no more! Today everything has to be the same for everybody!
