In this context, this A-B-A set is roaring through the Station with a westbound mail and express train. Note the signal bridge and the steam locomotive at the far right. In this context, they've paused at the Altoona Passenger Station to discharge/pick-up passengers and to change both engine and train crews. Note the railroader at the right who is adjusting the coupler so that the "snapper" can couple on and help pull the train up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Gallitzin and points West. The buildings in the background are part of the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops.
