Big Boy Advertisement |
Description: |
A 1941 ad by ALCO advertising the new 4-8-8-4s. World War 2 is still several months out, at least for the US. Depicted is UP 4000 in its as-delivered glory. The Big Boys topped all the competitors, coming in at 133 feet long, 595 tons in weight (including tender) and had a 24,000 gallon tank in a 47 foot tender. For reference, streamlined passenger cars usually measure 85 feet, the same length as the engine without the tender. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

Short Extra 4001 Westbound |
Description: |
With 11 cars and a caboose, 4001 leads a westbound extra out of Denver. The train will likely make several stops along the route to Laramie, picking up cars from local yards. The train is made up of a CB&Q stock car, 9 boxcars, and a flatcar carrying a load of wood. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

Union Pacific 4002 |
Description: |
Big Boy 4002 loiters at the engine facilities in Laramie, as her crew fiddles with the water tower. The large building in the background is likely the coaling tower at Laramie. After servicing, the engine will back onto another long outbound freight ready to leave town. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |

Big Boy in North Platte |
Description: |
UP 4002 waits for some maintenance at the North Platte engine facility. Note that the EMD switcher behind it does not even match the tender alone in length or height. Big Boys tended to stay west of Cheyenne but would sometimes venture to North Platte during coal shortages. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |
