Chesapeake Western Railway #111 |
Description: |
Built by the American Locomotive Works Richmond Plant in November of 1911 with construction number 43195, #111 was originally purchased by the Norfolk & Western Railway as part of an order of fifty class M-1 Mastodon type 4-8-0 locomotives. The Norfolk & Western also received fifty class M-1's from the Baldwin locomotive works totaling 100 engines as part of the M-1 class. Numbered #1077 while working on the Norfolk & Western Railway, the locomotive was assigned mainline duty until the late 1930's when more powerful articulates were placed on the road to command massive coal drags from West Virginia to Lambert's Point on the East Coast. Trying to shed some extra motive power, the Norfolk & Western agreed to sell six mastodons to the Chesapeake Western Railway which was run by Don W. Thomas at the time. #1077 was officially sold to the Chesapeake Western on March 2, 1943, and renumbered #111. Purchased with the intent to handle larger freight trains associated with the revival of the CW under the leadership of Don W. Thomas, the locomotive was used until being replaced by the new Baldwin switchers in the late 1940's. The locomotive, along with it's five sisters, was retired and scrapped in 1947 at the Elkton, Virginia, shops. This photograph shows the locomotive sitting in the deadline at the Elkton shops in either 1946 or 1947 shortly before it was scrapped. Date is an estimate. Unknown photograapher. |

From the looks of the crewmembers, this 1906 Alco 4-8-0 "Mollie" is in a backing up movement. All eyes are to the rear. With its 56" drivers and 200 psi boiler pressure, it would have been a fairly good switcher back then. |

CNJ 4-8-0C #469 - Central RR of New Jersey |
Description: |
As camelback locomotives go, this was a brute but was well suited to the hilly CNJ landscape while hauling coal. Built by Brooks (Alco) in 1900, it was well suited to burn the anthracite fuel in its wide Wooten firebox (123" long by 97" wide) which needed two firemen to stoke its hungry mouth. CNJ renumbered their class so this was actually built at #454. More than half retired before WWII with the last of the class scrapped in 1948 (#465). Specs - K-1 class, 55" drivers, 200 psi boiler pressure, 20x32" cylinders, engine weight of 201,000 lb, tractive effort of 43,619 lb. Rebuilt and superheated by the CNJ shops at Elizabethport in March 1917 to class K1s and rebuilt to class K1as at Ashley in November 1924. The photo is from the Bob Lorenz collection and the date is approximate. |

CNJ 4-8-0C #471 - Central RR of New Jersey |
Description: |
Here is an active 1899 Alco-Brooks camelback sitting in an unknown location. Thanks to a comment from Daniel Pagdon about the CNJ nickname for this wheel configuration, "Mastodon", it seems very appropriate! No date or location were given for this photo and no photographer was listed. |

CNJ 4-8-0C #479 - Central RR of New Jersey |
Description: |
Originally numbered 469, this Alco-Brooks camelback built in 1901 was renumbered in 1903 to 479. Rebuilt in 1919 to class K1, rebuilt again in January 1924 at Elizabethport to class K1as, reclassed in 1945 to TW40. The scan was left in its sepia tones as conversion to black/white caused a loss of details in this original photo. Thanks to a comment from Daniel Pagdon about the CNJ nickname for this wheel configuration, "Mastodon", it seems very appropriate! No date or location were given for this photo and no photographer was listed. |
