PRR 4414, I-1SA, 1951
Title:  PRR 4414, I-1SA, 1951
Description:  Rolfe. Here is an original photo by N. Rolfe that was taken near the 12th Street Footbridge and Passenger Station in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, 4 November 1951. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #4414, an I-1SA (2-10-0) "Decapod" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an I-1S during March of 1923, rebuilt in Juniata as an I-1SA in June of 1943, and retired in September of 1959 after 36 years of faithful service. In this context, it's serving as a brake at the end of a mineral train that's just come down the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve and is now on its way to the Eastbound Receiving Yard just beyond the 4th Street Footbridge. Just ahead of #4414 is PRR open hopper car #474292 loaded with snow-covered coal; behind it is an unidentified N-5 cabin car. Dominating the background is the part of the power plant for the PRR's 12th Street Car Shops. #1 of 6.
