ICG Gondola 246622 |
Description: |
In late 2002 the Canadian National removed the last vestiges of the former Illinois Central inbound and outbound main lines just north of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. These two lines had been severed at the New Orleans city limit in early 1954, when the IC began using NOUPT; but remained in place to serve various freight customers. These businesses gradually switched to truck, relocated or closed; and in 2000 the last customer, the Blue Plate Mayonnaise plant at the corner of South Jefferson Davis Parkway and Earhart Boulevard, closed after production moved to Knoxville. In this view, a pair of ICG gondolas were collecting ties along Earhart Boulevard near South Gayoso Street. |
