BN 950586 |
Description: |
Burlington Northern Railroad 950586 at Galesburg, Illinois on an unknown day in November 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. This car was built during World War II by ACF as a troop kitchen car. After the war, the CB&Q purchased 300 of the kitchen cars and converted them to express service. The Q preferred the kitchen cars to the troop sleepers because the sleepers were built with vestibule steps in the center thus weakening the frame. The cars were built with Allied Full Cushion trucks, which were outlawed in interchange service on January 1, 1955 due to the complex nature of their construction and difficulty in locating defects before road failure. |
