Looking South Into Washington Union Station Editors Pick! Contributor's Pick!
Looking south before they destroyed the interior for the Bicentennial and put a parking garage and highway bridge over the tracks. This shows how amazingly big the rotunda is. That's a GG1 in the terminal and a Washington Terminal RS1 switching. Note the interlocking tower mid-frame. Most/all of the station tracks to the left of it funnel into the two-track tunnel under First St. behind the Capitol which leads across the Potomac to ex-Potomac Yards and the ex-RF&P and ex-Southern. This tunnel is why no dome cars or Auto Train can go north of here. Well there is a freight bypass but it misses Union Station.
