"Extra 3985"!  Contributor's Pick!
I always thought it was cool how UP and SP steamers had signs the train number could be displayed on. Thus the Union Pacific 3985 proudly proclaims this train as the "Extra 3985". Or to use the official name for this run, the "Twin Cities Limited". Charging north for St. Paul through Rosemount, MN watched by folks and fans on the east and west sides of the Spine Line (which the UP shares with the CP/PGR between Rosemount and Comus, MN). Incidentally, ever since the UP/CNW merger I was thirsting to see eithier the 844 or 3985 pay the Twin Cities a visit. A factor which lessened my sadness over the passing of the North Western. Finally, thirteen years later (and having missed the 3985 in 2002) I could finally write this in my railfan notes: "Yippie! At last I have seen UP steam ..." And what a steamer is the 3985! I especially loved her deep, melodious whistle.
