Chesapeake Western 8  Contributor's Pick!
I wonder where this thing was when they found it and moved it to Winston-Salem. Look at where the trees lems grew in the grab irons.

Zachary DeVore General Most likely it came from Harrisonburg or Roanoke - the Chesapeake Western runs between Elkton, VA and Harrisonburg, VA and has been owned by the Norfolk & Western/Norfolk Southern since the 1950s. Because Harrisonburg requires flagmen at any unprotected crossings, cabooses continued on the line until all of the crossings were marked with gates and lights - once the need for flagmen disappeared, the need for cabooses disappeared. The Chesapeake Western still legally exists as a separate railroad, btw. The N&W never officially absorbed it, but all equipment is now NS. 7/8/2011 7:21:56 AM
