CB&Q Class XML-1 23013
Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad Class XML-1 23013 at Cicero, Illinois on an unknown day in January 1981, Kodachrome by Chuck Zeiler. From the book, "CB&Q Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment", by Michael J. Spoor: "Built in 1955 at Havelock (CB&Q shops in Nebraska), the 100 cars of the Class XML-1, numbered #23000-23099 were all equipped with Evans DF (Damage Free) Loader Equipment.". The re-weigh date is: CH 7 77, although below the re-weigh stencil it is also stencilled: Fort Madison 6 68. I believe the trucks were known as Chrysler trucks, and once had a shock absorber (snubber) mounted in brackets between the coil springs, which have been removed by the time of this photo. There are two notes in the October 1971 Official Railway Equipment Register (ORER): Note #4 says that cars in the 23000 to 23099 (among other numbers) are specially equipped with belt rails and cross bars. Note #19 says that this car specifically (23013, among other numbers mentioned) is equipped with fork lift truck pallets, platforms or skids, which will be considered part of the car. Of course, that was in 1971, and these items may or may not be present at this date (1981). This car also appears to acquired a replacement door during a shopping.
