Chuck Zeiler	General	For those not familiar with this locomotive design, it was the second of three experimental high pressure locomotives built by Alco at Schenectady for the D&H. This one was built in 1927; a high pressure design using watertubes as in marine applications, boiler pressure was 400 psi. When first outshopped, the jacketing extended only to the back of the cylinders, and later it extended all the way to the front, as seen here. Later still the tender was changed and the jacketing enclosed the headlight, producing the D&Hs trademark recessed headlight. Note that the rear tender truck shows a siderod and an exhaust stack is visible at the top rear of the tender. The D&H pioneered the use of the tender booster, a steam engine mounted and geared to the rear tender truck. This was necessary because the D&H had no freight locomotives with a trailing truck.	2/19/2009 5:17:43 PM
